Full-time: Cologne 3-1 Nuremberg

A strong performance from the hosts, who were particularly efficient in the first half - Downs opened the scoring with a powerful goal, Kainz confidently converted his penalty, and Huseinbašić added a third. The home side played cleverly and took advantage of every opportunity, while Nuremberg, despite fighting hard, created too little in attack.

Nuremberg trying everything

The Club have had 15 shots compared to just 13 from Cologne, but none of these have been real clear-cut chances.
85'

Time is running out

Pick delivers the free-kick cross from the left side as if it were a corner. A Nuremberg player manages to get his head to it in the scramble, but can't turn the ball goalwards and it goes over the bar!
83'

Strong performance

While Downs has been the standout player for Köln today, Paqarada has also put in a strong performance. He has consistently found good solutions when under pressure.
82'

Nuremberg not giving up the fight

Nuremberg are enjoying a lot of the possession, particularly down the left flank and through Yilmaz: they're constantly pushing forward. However, they're still struggling with the final pass.

Fresh legs

Klose brings on some replacements. The Club have 15 minutes plus stoppage time left to possibly salvage a point.

Latest attempt from the hosts

Maina cuts in from the left to the centre and lays it off to Kainz. He tries to do what Castrop did and shoots from 25 metres out, but didn't strike it well, and it goes straight into the arms of Reichert.

A thunderbolt!

Even though Schwäbe got a touch, he couldn't save Castrop's powerful long-range effort.
70'

Nuremberg not giving up yet

Jander is in the spotlight again. This time, he combines with Yilmaz as the visitors work their way into the penalty area. An imprecise final pass denied The Club a really dangerous opportunity.
67'

So close!

Jander shows great vision and threads the ball through to Castrop in behind the Cologne defenders in the penalty area. He takes one touch to control and shoots from about ten metres out on the left-hand side, but only finds the side netting.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
Although Nuremberg reduced the deficit with that goal, it still doesn't seem as if they could take the victory away from Cologne.

Top of the table

As things currently stand, Cologne are league leaders. However, Hannover and Elversberg could each jump to first place if they can find a goal in their games, which are also taking place right now.

What a goal!

Justvan and Castrop leave work it round the Cologne players with a spectacular one-two. Castrop is then brave and hammers the ball towards the goal from almost 30 metres out. Schwäbe gets a touch to it, but can't keep it out!

Flick takes aim!

Downs tries to clear the ball on the left side of defence, but it hits an opponent. The ball lands in the penalty area right at the feet of substitute Flick, who doesn't hesitate and takes a shot. The ball is deflected out for a corner kick.

Cologne seeking a fourth

While Nuremberg don't seem capable of getting a goal back in this game, the hosts remain hungry for more.

Good debut

Yilmaz remains cool on his first start and hasn't let the nerves get to him. Despite the scoreline, the youngster is playing well!

Free-kick chance

Paqarada delivers the free kick from near the right touchline. Reichert manages to clear with his fists, but the ball goes straight to Heintz, who shoots immediately and only narrowly misses the goal.

Late challenge

Thielmann had the ball on the right side and leaves Yilmaz for dead. However, the youngster immediately puts a challenge in on Thielmann, but by then the Cologne player had already passed the ball. A clear yellow card!

Too imprecise

Castrop has the ball at the edge of the penalty area and tries to slip it through to Tzimas, but the pass is a bit too long. The visitors are still struggling with the final ball.

Back underway!

The second half has kicked off. The two sides both had seven attempts in the first half, so it's not as if a result is impossible for The Club. Let's see what happens in this second 45 minutes.

Half-time: Cologne 3-0 Nuremberg

The home side go into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead, showing impressive efficiency. Damion Downs is the man of the first half: the striker scored early to make it 1-0 with a strong individual effort, won the penalty for the second goal, and finally set up Huseinbašić to make it 3-0 with a textbook assist.

Schwäbe alert to the danger!

Tzimas tries another attacking move for the visitors, but three Cologne defenders block his way in the penalty area. Instead, Tzimas turns away and lays it off to Yilmaz. The man making his first league start shoots from a tight angle, but Schwäbe is there and saves it at the near post!
41'

Cologne still getting forward

After a corner, the ball bounces around Nuremberg's penalty area for a few seconds. Huseinbašić reacts quickly, but Reichert smells danger and gets to the ball a second earlier than the Cologne player.
38'

Inches away!

Thielemann lets the ball run through his legs to get beyond his opponent. In plenty of space on the right, he lifts his head and sees Kainz lurking at the edge of the six-yard box. Thielemann delivers a beautiful cross, but Kainz just misses the ball by a whisker with the tip of his boot. That was very nearly 4-0!
camera-photo

Kainz confident from the spot

Kainz converted all nine penalties of his penalties in the first division, and now he's scored his first in the Bundesliga 2 as well.
35'

Lemperle replacement Downs shining

Damion Downs has now scored once, won the penalty for the second goals and directly assisted Huseinbašić for Cologne's third goal.
31'

Dictionary definition of efficiency!

Kainz has plenty of space in the centre circle. He turns and threads the ball between Nuremberg's centre-back and right-back, perfectly into Downs' path. He collects the ball, takes three or four big strides and squares it to Huseinbašić, who only needs to slide it past Reichert to score a very simple third goal for the home side.

Beautiful combination play

The Club combine beautifully to move up the pitch. After four or five passes, the ball reaches Villadsen, who delivers a cross into the penalty area, but Cologne's defence is alert and Martel clears with a header.

A real handful

Downs is causing big problems for Nuremberg. First, he scored to make it 1-0, and then he won the penalty which led to Cologne's second.
23'

Slow and steady wins the race

Cologne need an average of 17.5 seconds to regain possession of the ball, while Nuremberg manages to do so in just 13 seconds. Despite the visitors' quicker ball recoveries, the Billygoats lead 2-0 – efficiency over speed seems to be the motto so far!

Stonewall

Once again, it's a long ball down the left that causes danger. This time, Heintz receives the long pass, takes one touch and crosses into the middle, where he suspected Downs would be. The attacker controls the ball well and is just in front of the goal when a sliding tackle comes in. After a brief review, it is a clear foul, and a penalty is awarded!

Nuremberg try it again down the left. Tzimas gets past Hübers with a nice piece of skill, but then his final ball was neither a shot nor a cross.

More on that Nuremberg team

There's also one change for the visitors, who had named the same starting XI in their last three matches. Danilo Soares moves to the bench, while 19-year-old Berkay Yilmaz makes his first start in the Bundesliga 2.

More on that Cologne team

There is only one forced change in the starting eleven for the home side, with Damion Downs (6 goals this season) starting for the first time in nearly two months, having last played in the 5-1 defeat in Darmstadt on 18 October, in place of the injured top scorer Tim Lemperle (8 goals).

Nuremberg starting XI

Reichert - Jeltsch, Knoche, Karafiát - Villadsen, Jander, Yilmaz - Justvan, Castrop - Emreli, Tzimas

Cologne starting XI

Schwäbe - Hübers, Martel, Heintz - Thielmann, Ljubicic, Huseinbašić, Paqarada - Kainz, Maina - Downs

Gerhard Struber on facing Nuremberg

"Klose's signature in Nuremberg is clearly defined by possession, as well as their positional play. They are a very lively team that follows a clear plan."

Miroslav Klose on facing Cologne

"I know that football is a results-driven sport. We need to follow up and show a reaction to the Elversberg match. The manner in which we perform in Cologne will be crucial for me."

Dusting off the history books

Cologne secured their first league title in 1962 with a 4-0 victory over Nuremberg in the final against Nuremberg.

A Bundesliga 2 rarity

The sides have only met in the Bundesliga 2, in the 1999/2000 season: Cologne won 6-1 at home before the sides drew 1-1 in Nuremberg.

Last met over ten years ago

Cologne and Nuremberg meet in a competitive match for the first time since the 2011/12 Bundesliga season - back then, Nuremberg won 2-1 in both league fixtures.

Lemperle out until after Christmas

Cologne striker Tim Lemperle suffered a minor thigh injury during the match in Regensburg and will miss his side's two remaining matches in 2024.
