Full-time: Cologne 5-0 Eintracht Braunschweig
It is all over as the vastly superior Cologne coast to a 5-0 victory. If anything, the result was lenient on the visitors, as the home side had chances to score even more. Regardless, this is Cologne's first win of the season, while Braunschweig remain with zero points and have now suffered the heaviest defeat of this still young season.

Almost over for Braunschweig
Half of the three additional minutes are already up.

Goal! The icing on the cake for Cologne?
Now Waldschmidt adds his name to the scoresheet! He receives the ball 15 metres from goal and scores with a powerful left-footed shot to make it five.

Slow pace
This match is meandering towards its climax. Will there be one final memorable moment?
80'
Almost an own goal!
Adamyan crosses from the right towards the Braunschweig goal, where Ivanov attempts to clear. But the ball deflects off his shin and goes just over the bar - an own goal there would have somewhat summed up the away team's evening.
77'
Booking
Waldschmidt tries with both his hands and feet to win the ball from Köhler, ultimately brings him down and receives a yellow card as a result.
74'
Offside
Cologne continue to push forward. Substitute Waldschmidt shoots from the left of the penalty area and into the side netting but, given he was in an offside position when doing so, the goal would not have counted.

Eintracht caught out again
There has only been one Bundesliga 2 game this term which was won by at least three goals, and Braunschweig were involved in that, too, suffering a 5-1 loss to Schalke. While this game's result is not yet final, it looks like Eintracht are set for another significant loss.

Downs wants in on the act!
Now it's the turn of the 20-year-old American to try his luck, but Grill parries the attempt.
61'
From bad to worse for Braunschweig!
The onslaught continues! Lemperle is involved as he plays a through ball into Ljubicic, who stays ice-cold in front of Grill and increases the lead further. This could get ugly for the away team if they don't tighten up.
59'
Decisive third for Cologne!
The Billy Goats add another one - and what a goal it is! After a throw-in down the right, Ljubicic passes the ball into the path of Thielmann, who sprints almost to the byline and whips a cross to the far post. From there, Lemperle smashes in under the crossbar!
57'
Tentative from Braunschweig
Di Michele Sánchez tries his luck at the other end, but it goes straight to Urbig.
56'
Downs!
The youngster effort from around the penalty spot is saved by Grill, keeping his team in the game.
54'
Lemperle attempt blocked
Ljubicic drives the ball forward and plays a great pass to Lemperle just outside the box, but the latter's attempt is blocked for a corner. Playing the ball left to Maina would have perhaps been the better option.

Cologne right back at it
Braunschweig are put under pressure straight away as Paqarada's effort from outside the area drifts just wide.

Half-time in Cologne
Eintracht Braunschweig are struggling under the torrential rain as they trail 2-0 to an impressive Cologne thanks to goals from Hübers and Ljubicic. With better finishing, the match could have been decided already, but the scoreline still gives the away team hope.

Grill saves again!
Lemperle heads the resulting corner to the far post, where the on-loan Union Berlin shot-stopper dives well to prevent a third.
44'
Ljubicic!
The Cologne player is left unchallenged in a central position and takes aim with a curling shot. Grill, though, makes a diving save to concede a corner.
43'
Cologne having fun
The hosts are enjoying themselves here! Thielmann plays a delightful chipped ball behind the defence to put Ljubicic through on goal and, although he was standing in an offside position, it was still an eye-catching passage of play.

Maina continues top form
The 25-year-old forward has created both Cologne goals so far. As he scored his team's only goal himself in the first home match against HSV, he has now been involved in all three of their strikes at the RheinEnergieStadion in 2024/25.
34'
Cologne double their advantage!
The Rhinelanders are two to the good! The hosts work the ball well down the left flank before Maina - already in the opponent's penalty area - passes across to Ljubicic, who duly taps in from a few metres.
29'
First booking of the match
As the second-to-last man, Thielmann brings down Ould-Chikh to prevent a good counter-attacking opportunity. A yellow card is the result.

"Billy Goats" take the lead!
The subsequent set-piece leads sees Cologne take the lead! Maina's ball is fired towards the near post, where Hübers heads it onto Lemperle's back and in.

Cologne threaten
On the other end, Maina's cross free-kick cross from a similar position is headed behind by Nikolaou for a corner!
23'
Set-piece dealt with
Braunschweig win a free-kick just outside the penalty area and send it into the box. However, captain Hübers heads firmly away from danger.

Close again
Lemperle attempts to find Downs with a long ball. Nikolaou stretches and still manages to touch the ball with his head, pushing it out of the Cologne striker's reach, and the alert Grill rushes out of his penalty area to clear.
15'
So nearly 1-0!
The Braunschweig defence gifts possession just outside their own penalty area and Ljubicic almost takes advantage. His shot from 20 metres is tipped over the bar by Grill's fingertips. The resulting corner comes to nothing.
13'
Too high
Huseinbašić tries to play a high ball from the half-space to Lemperle in the opponent's penalty area, but that was far too optimistic and far too high.
9'
Young Billy Goats
Quick look at the home side's squad. Their oldest player on the pitch today is Paqarada at 29 years old. However, there are two over 30s sitting on the bench in Adamyan and Heintz, who are watching their young teammates make a promising start.
6'
Good start
Both teams are fully on it right from the start and refrain from the early probing play not very popular with the fans. Cologne have seen slightly more possession as Braunschweig mostly look to soak up the pressure and counter.
3'
Good shot
Danger at the other end now as Ould-Chikh pulls the trigger from the edge of the box and sends his shot just over the top right corner. Urbig dived and likely would've had it covered.
2'
Braunschweig almost from the off
The hosts pour forward as the rain falls in Cologne and they pounce on a defensive slip as Ljubicic passes the ball to Maina in the penalty area, whose low shot from about 13 yards goes straight into the arms of goalkeeper Grill.

Away we go!
The match is under way in Müngersdorf. The Billy Goats are playing in white, Braunschweig are in blue.

Visitors unchanged
Braunschweig lost 4-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt in the cup, but put in a decent performance. Probably because of this, coach Daniel Scherning refrains from changes and trusts the same 11 players here tonight.
Two changes for the home side
Compared to the cup match in Sandhausen, there are two changes in Cologne's starting XI as regulars Ljubicic and Martel return, while Waldschmidt and Olesen have to settle for a place on the bench.
Braunschweig starting XI
Grill - Ivanov, Bičakčić, Nikolaou - Rittmüller, Köhler, Di Michele Sanchez - Ould-Chikh, Kaufmann - Gómez, Philippe
Cologne starting XI
Urbig - Thielmann, Hübers, Pauli, Paqarada - Martel - Ljubicic, Maina, Huseinbašić - Downs, Lemperle
Scherning's view on Cologne
"The stadium will obviously also be an important factor and pose additional challenges for us. But I'm personally looking forward to it. It's a Saturday night game, the floodlights will be on again, great atmosphere, good opponent, cool challenge."
Struber's view on Braunschweig
"The cup win in Sandhausen was a test of where we are. It was important that we still had the game under control at the end. But we are obviously working on not getting into trouble during phases of the game. We'll take our opponent Braunschweig extremely seriously on Saturday. They barely conceded anything in the first half against Eintracht Frankfurt in the cup match."
