ADDED TIME!
We're now into five minutes of time added on at the end of this game.
89'
DOUBLE CHANGE
Quaison and Stöger on for the final minutes here, can they make the difference as they have done in recent weeks?
84'
MASCARELL BOOKED
The substitute is shown a yellow card for a foul on Kohr in midfield. The Spaniard is now suspended for next week's game against Wolfsburg.
83'
MUSTAFI DOWN
The Schalke defender is down now with a strain to a hamstring it seems, or some cramp. He will look to continue but it could be yet another injury for the Royal Blues.
82'
BIG CHANCE FOR BURKARDT!
The ball runs to Burkardt in the Schalke box and he lets it run across his body before shooting at goal with his left. Rönnow makes a fantastic save low down to his left to keep it out.
81'
SERDAR FORCES A SAVE!
Finally a second attempt of the game for Schalke as Serdar is found in space and drives forward before curling a shot at goal from 20 yards. It's a difficult one for Zentner to judge on the bounce but he parries it away.
80'
DEFENSIVE CHANGE
A straight swap on the right as Brosinski comes on for da Costa.
78'
KOLASINAC DOWN
Looks like the captain has a muscle injury of some kind here with plenty of tired legs out there. Mascarell is on in his place.
74'
CHANGE IN ATTACK
Glatzel comes on for the final 15 minutes or so in place of Szalai. The Cardiff loanee is looking to get a second Bundesliga goal having bagged against Leverkusen.

NOT FAR AWAY!
Another chance for Mainz but off-target once again. Burkardt brings a loose ball down beautifully before skipping past Becker. He shoots low at the near post but can't slide the ball on target with his left foot. Mainz creating plenty, but lacking a clinical touch in front of goal.
67'
IN THE DRIVING SEAT
Mainz are keeping the pressure on here with the ball camped in the Schalke half as we come towards the final 20 minutes or so. Schalke struggling to keep the ball for longer periods themselves, can the away side take advantage?
61'
DEBUT FOR SCHULER!
A big moment for Lucas Schuler as the 21-year-old former Cologne youth player comes on for his Bundesliga debut.
58'
MWENE HAS A GO
Mainz getting closer again still as Burkardt lays the ball off for Mwene to hit at goal with a backheel and it's once again blocked by Schalke's resilient defence.

BURKARDT ON THE CHARGE
A lovely pass from Boetius plays Burkardt into the Schalke area. He gets a shot away, but Thiaw is on hand to make a crucial block which sends the ball looping over the Schalke crossbar. Mainz still looking most likely to score here...
53'
SCRAPPY START
Both sides making a rough start to this second half with plenty of changes flying in, Mainz already having two yellow cards given against them.

BIG CHANCE AGAIN!
Szalai is inches from opening the scoring here after another delicious cross. This time it's Niakhate up on the left wing, who crosses with his right. Szalai is alone in the box but can't meet the ball with his header while Burkardt is also short in his attempts with a diving header. Big chances at the end of the first half.

SZALAI ON THE TURN!
Another big chance for Mainz as Szalai has a shot blocked in the Schalke area. Barreiro gets on the loose ball and his touch falls to Szalai again 10 yards from goal, and he turns to curl a shot at goal. Rönnow is stranded, but the ball whizzes past the outside of his post. Mainz doing a lot more of the attacking at the end of this first half.
40'
SHOT BLOCKED
Latza connects with a volley as a ball drops down into the Schalke area and he hits it sweetly, but it deflects up off a defender and Rönnow can pluck it out of the air. If not for that intervention, that could've been heading for goal.
38'
BIG CHANCE!
Mainz break well and it's da Costa once again who creates the danger. His low cross from the right is met by Barreiro around 10 yards out on the slide, and he attempts to divert the ball on goal. Rönnow panics slightly but is able to watch the ball roll wide across his goal.
35'
DEFENSIVELY SOUND
Schalke have done very well so far in keeping Mainz from creating chances on goal. Three off-target so far for the away side, and none close to threatening Rönnow in goal. Schalke will just want to get themselves going forward before the break.
28'
FINDING THEIR WAY
The away side have been much better here in the last few minutes, putting some pressure on the Schalke defence around their own area. So far, Schalke's shape has been good and it's been tough for Mainz to find space in behind.

22'
END-TO-END STUFF
Neither side has been able to keep control of the ball into the opposition's area so far, with both defences doing well to keep on top of the attacks coming at them. We're seeing the ball switch quickly from end to end, but Mustafi's chance the big one so far.
18'
HUGE CHANCE FOR MUSTAFI!
Bozdogan whips in a fantastic corner which lands right in front of goal for Mustafi to meet. It's the perfect run and header to meet the cross, but Zentner is on hand to make an outstanding reflex save from point-blank range. What a huge chance that was early on.
16'
TEASING CROSSES
Mainz had a league-high 34 crosses last weekend against Augbsurg and have started in the same manner this evening. Da Costa's whipped cross from the right bounces in front of the Schalke goal between 'keeper and defence, but no Mainz man is on hand to get on the end of it.

FIRST GO AT GOAL!
Mainz get the first shot of the game away but it's a poor one from St. Juste hit from distance which sails wide of goal. You can sense this is going to be a nervy night for both of these sides, who are starting this game looking to make no mistakes.
9'
KOLASINAC BOOKED
The Schalke captain is the first player in Felix Brych's book as he brings down Kohr on the break.
8'
GAME BEING BROKEN UP
Five fouls committed already in these opening 8 minutes as both Schalke and Mainz look to exploit the counter-attack after breaking up opposing attacks.
4'
THREE AT THE BACK
Schalke playing with a back three of Becker, Mustafi and Thiaw here, with William and Calhanoglu pushing on as wing-backs. An attack-minded set-up for Grammozis in his first game in charge.

HERE WE GO!
The ball is rolling at Schalke for this massive game between the bottom two in the table.
キックオフ
BOZDOGAN STARTS
Teenage midfielder Can Bozdogan is in to start in place of the injured Harit, who is still fit to take a place on the bench here.
HARIT A DOUBT
It looks like Schalke will not have Harit in from the start tonight as he has pulled up in training. We will confirm who is starting in his place as soon as we know.
NOW OR NEVER FOR SCHALKE?
This could certainly be looked at as the biggest game of the season for the Royal Blues. Schalke sit bottom of the Bundesliga table, eight points behind Mainz just one place above them in 17th. A defeat tonight would see them fall 11 points behind their nearest rivals with just 10 games of the campaign to play. A win, though, brings them within five points of Mainz and six of Arminia Bielefeld and Hertha Berlin above them.
SZALAI'S SCHALKE RETURN
Szalai played in the same Schalke team as Huntelaar in 2013/14, scoring seven goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances. However, he has not scored in the Bundesliga in 37 matches, dating back to 2 December 2019.
AWAY STRUGGLES FOR MAINZ
Despite claiming nine of their 17 points so far this season on the road, the 05ers rank as the third-worst travellers in the division ahead of Schalke and Bielefeld.
ROYAL BLUE OMEN?
Schalke are unbeaten in their last nine home league matches against the 05ers, losing only one of 16 all told.

WATCH: SCHALKE ARRIVE AT THE VELTINS-ARENA
SCHALKE TEAM NEWS
Dimitrios Grammozis has stepped into the void, but his task is not made any easier by a lengthy injury list that includes goalkeeper Fährmann, defenders Nastasic and Sane and forwards Uth and Huntelaar. Rönnow is back between the sticks, though, while 18-year-old Calhanoglu - brother of ex-Bundesliga playmaker, Hakan - is handed a Bundesliga debut at left-back, with Kolasinac moving into defensive midfield.
MAINZ TEAM NEWS
Midfielder Stöger and forward Onisiwo are among the players to have benefited from Svensson's appointment, but while the former is on the bench at the Veltins-Arena, the latter misses out altogether through injury. Frankfurt loanee Kohr and Burkhart are the two changes to the side that lost 1-0 to Augsburg last time out. Ex-Schalke man Szalai retains his place in attack, with Cardiff-owned forward Glatzel among the substitutes once more.
