Since that early Haaland chance, only Reyna has had a real go at goal for Dortmund. Bayern's defence is looking stable while Gnabry, Coman and Lewandowski continue to provide a threat at the other end. More goals still look possible.

With 10 goals to show for his first five appearances of the new Bundesliga campaign - he was rested on Matchday 6 - Lewandowski is once again the man to beat at the top of the scoring charts. The Bayern striker was on target in the Matchday 1 rout of Schalke, and has since swelled his tally considerably with respective four- two- and three-goal salvos against Hertha Berlin, Arminia Bielefeld and Eintracht Frankfurt. His only blank fell in the 4-1 defeat to Hoffenheim on Matchday 2 - a punch-drunk Bayern’s third competitive encounter of a bumper week and one he only joined with 33 minutes remaining.

Dortmund's top scorer in the Bundesliga last season is yet to get off the mark in 2020/21. The 20-year-old Englishman will be coming out all guns blazing to help his side find a way to score tonight against Bayern, with Haaland, Reus and Reyna all in support.

"Dortmund have an outstanding team. They have one of the best defences in the Bundesliga, a lot of quality up front and they are dangerous once they win possession. It's important that we play as a team. It's Der Klassiker, so everybody will be motivated. We know the whole world will be watching, which will spur us on even more. We are confident and will do everything we can to win the game."

It is Joshua Kimmich who has decided the last two competitive games between the clubs, though: he scored the winner for Bayern in Dortmund on Matchday 28 last season, and again in their 3-2 Supercup win in September.

"Between Bayern and Dortmund, one of us can take an important step forward in the table. We also know a game can sometimes be decided by which team plays on the front foot and which one sits back. It's important for us to show we want to remain at the top, that we're a top team playing top football."

Marco Reus will lead out his team in Der Klassiker, with Jadon Sancho, Gio Reyna and Erling Haaland in support in attack. Thomas Delaney is starting in midfield ahead of Jude Bellingham, while Thomas Meunier is in at right-back ahead of Lukasz Pisczeck for the hosts.

It's as you'd expect in midfield and attack for Bayern, with Leroy Sane waiting on the bench among others for his first Klassiker outing. Meanwhile, Bouna Sarr starts at right-back with Benjamin Pavard out with a thigh injury. Jerome Boateng also starts with Niklas Süle self-isolating.

Haaland hit a brace as Dortmund moved top of Champions League Group F thanks to a 3-0 win away to Brugge on Wednesday. It was a seventh clean sheet in nine games this term for Lucien Favre's side, who have by far the best defensive record in the league in 2020/21, having shipped just two to date. Mats Hummels has made a significant contribution to that - as well as scoring BVB's last three Bundesliga goals - and the centre-back should be fit enough to start on Saturday after missing the midweek trip to Belgium with a thigh complaint. Thomas Delaney should slot into the now-customary back four should Hummels not make it, although Emre Can is also available having been self-isolating. Gio Reyna could be set for his first start in a Klassiker, dovetailing with Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus in attacking midfield behind Haaland.

Lewandowski took his tally for the season to 12 goals in eight competitive outings as Bayern overran Red Bull Salzburg in the closing stages of their Champions League tie on Tuesday, and, after being rested for the Matchday 6 victory away to Cologne last week, will be raring to go against his former side. Coach Hansi Flick rarely tinkers with his team too much, so the Polish goal-getter is likely to continue to be supported in the final third Thomas Müller, Serge Gnaby and Kingsley Coman, although Leroy Sane is now fully fit again and pushing for a fourth league start of the season. The defending champions will be forced to make one change from the Cologne game though, as Niklas Süle is in quarantine, so Jerome Boateng is expected to partner David Alaba in central defence. Alphonso Davies' ongoing absence means Lucas Hernandez should begin at left-back once more, while Leon Goretzka could return to the side following a minor calf strain.
