SWEET 16

It was Bayern's Paul Wanner yesterday - now it's the turn of Sidney Raebiger. The 16 year old becomes Leipzig's youngest player to appear in the German top tier.

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES

Fresh legs on both sides, and a chance to impress for the likes of Joscha Wosz and Merveille Papela in the closing stages. Leipzig have taken their foot off the gas since that fourth goal.

CHANCE!

Leipzig toying with Mainz as Nkunku gets off a shot in the box, but it's straight at Zentner.

SILVA EARNS A BREATHER

No hat-trick for Silva, but he'll be happy with his first Bundesliga brace in Leipzig colours. Young Novoa, 18, makes his third Bundesliga appearance of the campaign.

STRIKE RATE

Leipzig have scored with 50 percent of their efforts on goal, and we still have over 20 minutes of normal time remaining...

SILVA AT THE DOUBLE!

Leipzig are running away with it! Nkunku waltzes through the Mainz defence, before laying the ball off. Szoboszlai leaves it for Silva, who thunders a finish past Zentner from just inside the box.

GOAL MANIA

Mainz hit back with a wonderfully worked effort through Lee, only for Leipzig to restore their two-goal lead from the restart. Szoboszlai sends Nkunku through, and he calmly dinks over the advancing Zentner.

LEIPZIG DOUBLE THEIR LEAD!

A mountain to climb for Mainz now. A ball up from the back finds Nkunku, who squares for Szoboszlai to fire into the top corner with the outside of his right foot. There's a check for a possible offside against Szoboszlai in the build-up, but he didn't touch the initial ball.

HALF-TIME! LEIPZIG 1-0 MAINZ

Andre Silva's penalty is the difference between the two sides at the break. Leipzig created the better chances, and have been fairly comfortable since Alexander Hack's sending off.

INTO THE WALL

Martin wins an indirect free-kick in the Leipzig area for a high boot against Poulsen. Three players line up to take, but it's curled into the Leipzig wall.
36'

POULSEN LURKING

Szoboszlai tries to find Poulsen, but the cross is just out of the Dane's reach. Angelino's return ball - also directed towards the head of Poulsen - is collected by Zentner.
32'

PRESSURE MOUNTING

Leipzig tease the ten men of Mainz with some slick passing in the final third, before Szoboszlai shoots wide via a deflection. A second goal before the break would put the hosts in firm control.

Leipzig looking to make their numerical advantage count as Kampl fires wide from outside the box. Not his strong suit, but a decent effort.

LEIPZIG LEAD!

Drama at the Red Bull Arena! Zentner thwarts Poulsen at close quarters, with the rebound falling to Silva. He launches it goalwards, only to be denied by Hack's outstretched hand. The VAR confirms the decision as Mainz go down to ten men, and Silva dispatches the ensuing penalty.

ZENTNER!

Gvardiol powers in off the left-hand side and curls goalwards from 20 yards. Zentner's at full stretch, turning it round the post with his fingertips. Superb stop.
16'

LEE CAUTIONED

Lee is penalised after going in hard on Klostermann. Studs were on show as he slid towards the ball, though there didn't appear to be any malice in the challenge.
13'

WHAT A CHANCE!

Leipzig with some quick one-touch football on the corner of the area. Adams shifts it out to Szoboszlai, who pings an inch-perfect cross towards Silva in the box. He buries them normally, but doesn't make a connection on this occasion - perhaps put off by the jump of Widmer ahead of him.

MAINZ CONFIDENCE

Positive start from Mainz, who are getting in the Leipzig faces and shifting the ball with real purpose.

LET'S GET IT ON!

Under way at the Red Bull Arena, where some Rocky-style motivational music was blaring out before kick-off. No fans in attendance, remember.

WATCH: THE FANTASTIC FOUR

Staying with Nkunku, he's been one of the stars of the season so far. The Frenchman has a team-leading seven goals and five assists in the Bundesliga, and had a direct hand in nine (seven goals and two assists) during a difficult, and ultimately unsuccessful, UEFA Champions League group campaign. He's also made one and scored another across two DFB Cup fixtures.

WATCH: DECEMBER PLAYER OF THE MONTH NOMINEES

Leipzig's Christopher Nkunku didn't disappoint in December. The former PSG attacker, only fit enough for a place on the bench today, scored two and assisted another, contributing to half his team’s strikes across a hot and cold month.

PREVIOUS MEETING

He may be missing today, but Niakhate got Mainz off to a winning start to 2021/22 when the sides last met on the opening weekend, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 home win.

MAINZ TEAM NEWS

As for Mainz, Bo Svensson makes just two changes. One is enforced, with captain Moussa Niakhate unavailable. Daniel Brosinski comes in for his first start since Matchday 7. We’ll have to see if he’s in the back three or goes to right wing-back, with Silvan Widmer dropping back. The other change sees Jean-Paul Boetius make his first start since Matchday 13, in place of Leandro Barreiro.

LEIPZIG TEAM NEWS

Domenico Tedesco makes four changes to the side that lost the final game of 2021 at home to Bielefeld. Nordi Mukiele, Benjamin Henrichs and Emil Forsberg all miss out, while Christopher Nkunku is only fit enough for the bench after returning to Leipzig only on Thursday. Mohamed Simakan, Lukas Klostermann, Tyler Adams and Yussuf Poulsen come into the team. The latter makes his first appearance since the start of November, having scored in his last three Bundesliga games.
