Three-way battle at the top
The final score is harsh on Hertha and doesn't reflect how well they played for much of the game, but Dortmund were simply much more clinical today. Their victory – their eighth in as many games in 2023 – moves them level on 43 points with Bayern Munich and Union Berlin in the standings. BVB are in second place on goal difference alone, while Bayern and Union meet in Munich next weekend. What a title race we have in store!

Bynoe-Gittens almost in
Good stuff from Schlotterbeck in the middle of the park to win possession and spy the run of Bynoe-Gittens. His pass behind the defence forces Hertha onto the back foot but Rogel just manages to slide in ahead of the English teenager.

Wholesale changes
Hertha coach Schwarz injects fresh legs into his side with a whopping four substitutions at one go!

Dortmund change
With Hertha refusing to give up and searching for an equaliser, Terzic brings on two of his big guns in Bellingham and Haller in a bid to swing momentum back Dortmund's way.

Reus blocked
Neat interplay on the right from Dortmund as quick passing between Wolf, Brandt and Reus frees the latter into space. He tries to thread a pass into Malen but it's cut out by a Hertha leg.

Key phase
Dortmund are trying to take the sting out of Hertha's momentum by keeping ball and stroking it around at the back and in midfield. You get the sense that if they can weather this storm, BVB will go on and get another goal or two, but a Hertha equaliser would obviously change the flow of the game entirely.
52'
Chance for Niederlechner!
Hertha are eyeing an equaliser and their next chance comes for Niederlechner, whose well-struck half volley is straight at Kobel.

Hertha pull one back!
Dortmund are caught napping and are far too passive at the back as Ngankam gets the wrong side of Hummels down the left. He flicks it inside to Serdar, who lays it off for Tousart to rifle into the net. Game on!

Dortmund clinical
The hosts haven't been at their best but two moments of magic from Adeyemi - who has sadly had to go off injured - have given them a comfortable lead. It's hard to see Hertha coming back from this, but they have had some encouraging moments and forced Kobel to make some good saves.

Adeyemi can't go on and his replaced by Bynoe-Gittens. A goal and an assist in 32 minutes on the pitch isn't a bad day's work for the Germany international. Hopefully his injury isn't anything serious.

The forward limps off the pitch to receive treatment as he grimaces in discomfort.

Dormtund make it two!
Brandt finds Adeyemi on the left. His pace takes him past his marker and into space, where he crosses for Malen at the back post. The Dutchman squeezes in his shot and BVB are 2-0 up!
30'
Side netting!
All of a sudden Dortmund have the wind in their sails. Malen scampers down the left, cuts inside and smashes a shot at goal that goes narrowly the wrong side of the near post.
28'
Dortmund lead!
Brandt plays the ball to Reus, who drives forward towards the edge of the Hertha box, right of centre. His low shot looks to be going wide until Adeyemi spins and flicks it in with his heel. A lovely finish, but perhaps a touch harsh on Hertha, who have played well so far.
25'
First chance for Dortmund!
Lovely footwork again from Brandt, this time on the left, as he crosses into the middle for Reus, who steers his header wide of the back post.
22'
Kobel at the double!
Two good chances for Hertha in quick succession. First, Niederlechner outmuscles Schlotterbeck about 40 yards out before striding towards goal and unleashing a shot that Kobel does well to punch clear. The rebound comes to Richter on the right and he cuts inside Ryerson, shooting low towards the far post, but again Kobel is well-placed to save.

Reus almost in!
Lovely vision from Brandt on the right as he spies Reus making a forward run. He tries to slide the ball into his path but it's cut out by the outstretched leg of a defender.
12'
Chance for Ngankam!
Out of the blue, Hertha have the first opening of the game. A sloppy pass from Wolf on the right goes straight to Ngankam in a central position, about 10 yards outside the Dortmund area. He immediately turns and shoots but his effort whizzes just over the far. Wolf raises his hand apologetically and breathes a huge sigh of relief.

Advantage Dortmund?
BVB have won 34 of the 71 (48 percent ) Bundesliga meetings between these sides, including seven of the last eight. There have been nine draws overall in Dortmund, with just four Hertha victories - the most recent of which was on 21 December 2013!
