Nagelsmann: Result all important

Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann said it was crucial his team won to edge ahead of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga standings.

Bayern win it

A super ending to this one, with chances at both ends. Bayern take the three points that lift them back to the top, but the visitors were made to sweat in the end following Juan Jose Perea's late header. In the final analysis, goals in either half from De Ligt and Choupo-Moting win the day for the Bavarians.

So close Stuttgart !

Endo jinks and twists and manages to keep the ball at his feet on the right. The cross comes in and Coulibaly whips a header towards the back stick. Sommer is rooted, looks over his shoulder and sees the ball flash narrowly wide.

Non-stop Davies

The tireless Davies sprints through on the left and wins a corner late on. Kimmich's delivery comes to nothing.

Well, well, well! Stuttgart are back in this late on. A super Tiago Tomas cross from the left sees substitute Juan Jose Perea rising. He beats De Ligt in the air and angles a header into the corner.

Bayern double up

Easy as pie. Musiala receives the ball in midfield, his back to goal. The 20-year-old spins and plays it forward for Müller, who angles a short pass into the path of Choupo-Moting. The forward applies a first time finish and Bayern double their lead.

Suddenly Genki Haraguchi is the last man facing a swift Bayern counter-thrust. This looks bad for Stuttgart. Musiala looks to play a pass but Haraguchi slides in and snuffs out the danger. Outstanding.

Save of the season?

Coman's cross from the right is superb and finds Goretzka right in front of goal. The big man batters a header at the target but Bredlow is already off his feet and manages to throw his hands at the bullet, sending the ball over the top. That all happened so quickly. Ok, the header was quite central, but a super save nonetheless. Bredlow celebrates with a fist pump - think tennis player after a winning volley.

Here come the teams

Spectacular atmosphere inside the Mercedes-Benz Arena as the teams begin to make their way out onto the pitch ...

Slip-ups costly

For their part, Bayern know that with rivals Dortmund in exceptional form since the turn of the year, this evening's visitors cannot afford a misstep here. Win today and and the defending Bundesliga champions are back on top with a goal difference advantage over BVB.

Stuttgart in need

After the earlier results this afternoon, Stuttgart now find themselves as one of four teams on 19 points at the bottom of the table. They are joined by Schalke, Bochum and Hoffenheim at the foot of the standings. What Bruno Labbadia's men wouldn't give for three points today, big ask though it is.

Tale of the tape

A quick reminder that today's visitors have won 67 of the 107 Bundesliga games between these sides, losing just 18 of those.

VfB's lucky charm?

Ok, it's been an awful long time since Stuttgart beat Bayern, but they do have a player in their starting line-up today who has achieved that feat. Dan-Axel Zagadou won a Bundesliga game against the mighty Bavarians back in 2018 when he was at Borussia Dortmund.

Team news

Both sides are showing just one change for this encounter. Dan-Axel Zagadou is in for the suspended Borna Sosa at Stuttgart while Dayot Upamecano's return from suspension sees former Stuttgart player Benjamin Pavard dropping to the bench.

Nagelsmann wary

Bayern boss, Julian Nagelsmann, meanwhile, is well aware that his opposite number will have Stuttgart on their toes come kick off. "Bruno Labbadia will get them fired up so we also need to be fired up,” the coach said. "Their last two games against us have gone more in VfB's favour (so) we need to be prepared for them giving everything."

VfB seeking "perfect day"

VfB coach Bruno Labbadia insists his side will be meeting Bayern face-to-face when the sides to battle at the Mercedes-Benz Arena later. “As opponents you obviously need a perfect day," the 57-year-old explained. "We’re going into the game with a bold approach. Against Bayern, we not only need a solid defence but also need to stand up and be counted on a regular basis when we’re in possession and express ourselves.”

Watch: Previous meeting: Bayern 2-2 Stuttgart

Talking of youngest players, Mathys Tel became the youngest person ever to score for Bayern in the Bundesliga when he netted in the reverse fixture. However, a Serhou Guirassy penalty in added time snatched a draw for Stuttgart.

Davies set for ton

Alphonso Davies is in line to make his 100th Bundesliga appearance in this game. He’d become the youngest non-German and sixth-youngest player overall to bring up a century of Bundesliga games for Bayern.

A cut above

Bayern have scored 19 goals more than any other team in the Bundesliga this season, while they’ve also conceded six fewer than the next best. Their goal difference in the first half of matches alone is +33, having scored 42 and shipped just nine.

Back in time

Stuttgart’s last home win over Bayern came in November 2007 when a certain Mario Gomez scored twice past Oliver Kahn in a 3-1 victory. Going back even further, current VfB coach Bruno Labbadia scored 28 goals in 82 Bundesliga appearances for FCB as a player between 1991 and 1994. As a coach, however, he’s lost 15 of his 16 Bundesliga games against the Munich club. That includes the last 13 in a row, which is the longest losing run of any coach against a particular opponent in Bundesliga history.

Home comforts (sort of)

All four of Stuttgart’s wins this season have come at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. However, they have lost their last 12 competitive meetings at home to Bayern. The record champions have scored 98 goals away at Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. No team has yet to reach a century away at an opponent in the top flight.
