The final whistle blows on Freiburg's UEFA Champions League hopes. The visitors, who were hoping to leapfrog Union Berlin into fourth place, led through Vincenzo Grifo's header. However, the DFB Cup finalists responded through late Kolo Muani and Dina Ebimbe goals to help the Eagles to a seventh-placed finish. Freiburg finish in fifth.

A 2-2 draw at relegation scrappers Schalke last week keeps Frankfurt’s hopes of European qualification alive, but they will need to win here for a chance of that to happen via the league. They could also earn a UEFA Europa League spot by winning the DFB Cup next week against Leipzig. Their form has been patchy throughout 2023, including just one win in their last 13 Bundesliga games. But they are unbeaten at home in nine going back to October.

A maiden UEFA Champions League qualification is so tantalisingly close for Freiburg as they look to cap off a brilliant campaign. Victory over Wolfsburg last week assures them of fifth place and keeps them in the running for fourth, only behind Union Berlin on goal difference after losing 4-2 against them a fortnight ago. A win, loss or draw could be enough for the Black Forest club depending on Union’s result against Werder Bremen.

Freiburg’s 21 goals from dead balls this season is the most in the division.

Freiburg have amassed 25 points on the road already this season. The only time they’ve had more away from home in the Bundesliga under Streich was last term (26).

Freiburg are only outside the top four on goal difference behind Union Berlin. The right set of results here could therefore see them qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever.

Starting the day on 59 points, this is already Freiburg’s best-ever season under Christian Streich and the second-best in their Bundesliga history, having finished third with 66 (using three points for a win) under Volker Finke in their second top-flight campaign (1994/95).

Oliver Glasner takes charge of Frankfurt for the final time in the Bundesliga. His side are currently on 47 points, having earned 42 (and the UEFA Europa League title) in his first campaign. His last game will be next week’s DFB Cup final in Berlin.

Frankfurt simply have to win this game if they are to have a chance of finishing higher than eighth. Their final position and whether they win the DFB Cup will determine whether seventh place earns European qualification.

Frankfurt have lost only one of their last six league encounters with Freiburg, although that was here last season (2-1).

Eintracht are unbeaten in their last nine Bundesliga games at Deutsche Bank Park (five wins, four draws).
