Bochum were the big winners on the final day thanks to a commanding 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. An early sending off for Leverkusen's Amine Adli gave the hosts a boost, and first-half strikes from Philipp Förster and Takuma Asano left Bochum in command before Kevin Stöger capped the vital victory that secured safety in front of the delighted Bochum fans.

Coach's view: Leverkusen

Xabi Alonso: "The situation is clear: we have to win. For the club, for the fans and for us as a team. We expect an intense atmosphere and a game with high intensity. We have to defend well, then we will create our chances. The last few months have been a process and we have developed. Tomorrow we have to be ready from the first minute. Every action is crucial for our future."

Coach's view: Bochum

Thomas Letsch: "We can feel that the whole city is behind us. I'd like to say thank you for that. Everyone knows where we are in the table. Anything is possible. We've got matters in our own hands in terms of staying in the Bundesliga, whether we do that directly on Saturday or via the play-offs. We've had a good week and you can sense a positive tension."

Watch: Decision Day at Both Ends

The title, Europe, relegation – there’s still so much left to be decided at both ends of the table on the final day of the Bundesliga season.
camera-photo

Bochum: personnel

Thomas Letsch was boosted this week by the returns of Patrick Osterhage (pictured) and Philipp Förster to training, but Kostas Stafylidis won't feature after a rib issue prevented him from training again. Saidy Janko and Dominique Heintz appear to be the men in possession in the full-back spots, meaning places on the bench again for Cristian Gamboa and Danilo Soares.

Bochum: form

A late, late goal from Keven Schlotterbeck last week not only relegated Hertha Berlin but kept Bochum (just) out of the automatic drop zone, a point clear of Ruhr neighbours Schalke. They have managed results in three of their last four home games and will likely need to do the same here if they’re to avoid automatic relegation and then potentially also avoid the play-off by moving above Stuttgart, with the sides level on points but Bochum behind due to a substantially inferior goal difference.

Leverkusen: personnel

Piero Hincapie serves the first game of a three-match ban that will span into next season as a result of his red card against Gladbach. With Odilon Kossounou and sometimes makeshift defender Robert Andrich also out injured, it will mean either a reshuffle at the back or a change to a four for Xabi Alonso. Kerem Demirbay is also suspended, so a change will be needed in midfield as well. The Spanish coach is expected to continue with the front three of Florian Wirtz (pictured), Amine Adli and Moussa Diaby.

Leverkusen: form

Bayer remain in pole position to secure sixth place and another season of continental football, going into the final matchday a point ahead of Wolfsburg and three clear of Frankfurt. They’ve somewhat limped towards the finishing line with three draws and a loss in their last four, but attention was also on their UEFA Europa League exploits during that time. They squandered a 2-0 lead at home to Gladbach last weekend, making things that bit more tense on the final day.

Watch: Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 Borussia Mönchengladbach - highlights

Amine Adli and Kerem Demirbay goals had sent Leverkusen on course to beat Gladbach, only for Lars Stindl to complete a second-half comeback with a 90th minute strike.

Long time since last win

Bochum's last win against Bayer Leverkusen came back in March 2008 - a 2-0 home win.

Bochum no boys

Bochum have fielded comfortably the oldest Bundesliga side by average age this season (29.1 years old).

Away strength

Bayer Leverkusen have suffered fewer defeats on the road this season (five) than at home (six).

Mixed formbook

Leverkusen are unbeaten in seven away matches in the Bundesliga, but have failed to win their past four for the first time under Alonso.

Fresh faces on dugouts

Despite several coaching changes since they took charge of their clubs in the autumn, Xabi Alonso and Thomas Letsch remain the two Bundesliga coaches with the fewest matches under their belt in the league (25 and 26 respectively).

Big business still at stake for both

Bochum need a win to avoid automatic relegation (and potentially ensure survival depending on other results), while a win for Leverkusen is the only way they can guarantee a European qualification spot. Sit tight!
