What a sensational curtain raiser to the season that was ! Bayern were cruising, leading 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Musiala, Mane and Pavard. Halstenberg's header gave Leipzig hope, but Gnabry then restored the visitors' big lead. Nkunku netted from the spot before Olmo's near-post effort set up a grand-stand finish. Deep into injury time, Sane made sure Bayern won the Supercup with a breakaway goal.

NAGELSMANN WANTS BAYERN STATEMENT

Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann explained that tonight's opponents, Leipzig, "...are a young and hungry club that always try to chip away at Bayern's status." For that reason, the 35-year-old insisted that, "... it's important at Bayern that we make a statement," with their performance later.

Bayern claimed a 10th successive Bundesliga title last season, with former Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann - like his old club - winning a major trophy for the first time in his career. Robert Lewandowski was the man that plundered the goals last season, but has since left the club. Today, we will get the first competitive look at how Mane can fill that gap.

HOW THEY GOT HERE: RB LEIPZIG

Leipzig lifted their first major trophy last season by defeating Freiburg 4-2 on penalties in a dramatic final. Nkunku was the star yet again, cancelling out Maximilian Eggestein’s effort in normal time to make it 1-1 with 14 minutes to play before successfully converting the first of Leipzig’s penalties. They were perfect with four from four, while Freiburg missed twice to ensure the trophy left with Domenico Tedesco’s side.
