Watch: Guirassy: "We deserved to win"

90'
+ 6

Full-time: Stuttgart 2-1 Dortmund

A thoroughly deserved win for Stuttgart, who celebrated the return of Guirassy with a winning goal from... Guirassy. Their former goalkeeper Kobel did his best to frustrate them, and with an xG of nearly 4.5, had the Swabians not taken three points, they would have wondered why. But up popped their top scorer, spot on with his 15th goal of the season.

Victory nearly Silas'd

That could have been it for Dortmund, but Silas fails to put a seal on all three points as he blasts the ball into the side-netting from a tight angle.

That is what Stuttgart missed!

Guirassy leaves Kobel no chance and strokes in his 15th goal of the season, and like many of his previous goals this season, that could be worth three points!

Penalty!

Guirassy skips past Kobel and it's a second penaltry of the game for Stuttgart! No second yellow card, though.

Just needed a touch!

A corner is headed by Anton towards the far post, but Silas is a yard or so away from getting the touch it needed to be dispatched.

Vagnoman's shot is the latest to be saved by Kobel. How big a 'hand' has he had in this xG not being enough for more than one goal for Stuttgart?

One of the reasons why Stuttgart have looked so impressive today has been their pass accuracy, which is nearly 90% - and that from almost 500 passes,

No faulting Stuttgart for their effort, but as we see Guirassy warming up on the sideline, this particular statistic may be one to hasten his entrance.

Double Dortmund change

Adeyemi, who was walking a tightrope on a yellow card, is replaced by Reus, while Malen comes on for Brandt. Two changes after a rather difficult first half for Dortmund.

Half-time: Stuttgart 1-1 Dortmund

It is hard to see how this game is still level, with Undav going very close to giving the hosts the lead with the final touch of the game. Kobel has been inspired between the Dortmund posts, keeping his team on terms faced with an xG of 2.47 for Stuttgart - but just one goal for the Swabians.

Dortmund's lead did not last long before Stuttgart grab a deserved equaliser. Undav played in by Leweling, and it's a great finish. Kudos for that magnificent assist, though.

Not Leweling up

Another huge chance for Stuttgart, with Leweling denied by Kobel. All that does not add up here for the hosts so far is the scoreline, because all the other indicators are spot on.

Three changes

On the field to begin with, Sebastian Hoeneß names three differente players to the ones who went into action first in a 2-0 defeat to Heidenheim last week. Silas, Anthony Rouault and Wooyeong Jeong all drop to the bench while Maximilian Mittelstädt, Enzo Millot and Jamie Leweling pull their socks up from the start.

Guirassy returns

He will be seated to begin with, although he Guirassy will have his gear on and will be geared up to making a return after missing Stuttgart's last two games. That's a whopping 14 goals waiting to spring from the sideline.

Unchanged from midweek

Edin Terzić selects the same starting XI as he did for the 2-0 win over Newcastle in the UEFA Champions League. It is only the second time this season that the head coach sends the same team out for two games running, having picked the same team on Matchday 1 as he had in the DFB Cup the week before.

Stuttgart starting XI:

Nübel - Anton (c), Zagadou, Ito, Mittelstädt – Karazor, Stiller - Leweling, Millot, Führich – Undav

Stuttgart subs:

Bredlow, Jeong, Silas, Stenzel, Haraguchi, Stergiou, Roualt, Vagnoman, Guirassy

Dortmund starting XI:

Kobel (c) - Süle, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Ryerson - Özcan - Sabitzer, Nmecha – Adeyemi, Füllkrug, Brandt

Dortmund subs:

Meyer, Bensebaini, Reyna, Haller, Reus, Wolf, Moukoko, Malen, Bynoe-Gittens

Terzić's view on Stuttgart

"Stuttgart have made a very good start to the season. We know it will be a tough task, but we want to do everything we can to make sure it's a tough task for Stuttgart too."
camera-photo

Hoeneß's view on Dortmund

"It was probably really hard to lose 4-0 at home [to Bayern Munich], so you then have to come up with a good response. It was a good response from Dortmund [beating Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League]. But the reason I wasn't that surprised is because they've simply been performing well, especially in recent weeks. They're top of an extremely difficult [Champions League] group and have been pretty stable in the Bundesliga, if we disregard the last matchday. From that point of view, I expect a stable Dortmund team."

Guirassy goals to return?

Guirassy has 14 goals from just eight league appearances so far this season, with only Harry Kane (15) netting more. The Stuttgart man is hoping to recover from a hamstring injury to feature.

Familiar faces

Chris Führich, Atakan Karazor, Pascal Stenzel and Dan-Axel Zagadou are all former BVB players in the VfB ranks, while Gregor Kobel swapped Stuttgart for Dortmund in 2021.

Slight dips in form

Stuttgart have now lost two Bundesliga matches in a row for the first time under Sebastian Hoeneß, while Dortmund are also two without a win (one loss, one draw) but seven wins out of the first 10 games in a season is a club record for VfB and BVB haven't yet lost two games in a row or gone three without a win in 2023.
