Full-time: Mainz 0-1 Freiburg

Almost a smash-and-grab victory when you look at the statistics, but if the truth be told, Mainz were wasteful while Freiburg - though creating fewer chances overall - were more threatening with them. After hitting the post twice, Gregoritsch got the all-important winner and Freiburg never looked like relinquishing it afterwards, picking up a big three points on the road to round off a remarkable week for Christian Streich's men. After a win and two draws, this is Siewert's first defeat as Mainz boss, and he will be wondering how after his side created an xG of 2.7 compared to Freiburg's 1.4.

Scrambled away!

Almost an equaliser, but Freiburg manage to scramble the ball away before Barreiro can turn it in at the far post!

Sallai so close!

That would have been game, set and match, but Batz pushes Sallai's shot wide for a corner.

Six more minutes

Can Mainz find a late leveller? They have the lowest xG of all Bundesliga clubs this season, but they have 2.48 for this match.

Running out of ideas...and energy

Mainz do not seem able to muster any chances and Siewert's unbeaten record is wobbling.

Twenty eighth attempt

It took Gregoritsch 28 shots to open his account in the Bundesliga this season.

AT. LONG. LAST!

For the first time since May, Gregoritsch has scored a Bundesliga goal! This was the hardest chance of the lot for the Freiburg forward, but he twists and sweeps in a left-footed shot to send the visiting fans wild.

Burkardt back

There were tears of emotion when Burkardt made his return after a long time out injured last week, and here he is now for his return in front of his own fans. More emotions on his face, but could it get even better?

Van den Blank

Another big chance for Mainz, this time van den Berg just a few yards out, but he draws the latest blank.

Staggeringly goalless

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
It is very surprising still to be goalless, with Mainz creating chances for at least two goals and Freiburg almost one.

Twelfth man rising

The Mainz faithful have sensed they are needed to lift their team, and the volume has increased here as the hosts push to break the deadlock.

Open goal missed!

Ajorque will wonder how he has not put Mainz in front! Faced with an open goal, he diverts a cut-back tamely towards goal with Atubolu pouncing on it. On reflection, it does not look like it was even on target. He and Gregoritsch are both in need of a goalscoring confidence boost here.
52'

Early for Eggestein

It took 24 minutes for Freiburg to have a chance in the first half, so this one for Eggestein is relatively early. He drags it wide with his left foot, though, and it remains goalless.
49'

Bright start again

Like in the first half, Mainz have made a bright start to this second half, with almost all of the possession so far. Can they now make it count?

Half-time: Mainz 0-0 Freiburg

All square at the break and after a flurry of early chances for Mainz, Freiburg got back into the game with Gregoritsch hitting the woodwork twice. Van den Berg almost gave Mainz the lead on the cusp of half-time, but for all the opportunities, it remains goalless at the break.

Great save

A fine header from van den Berg is heading for the top corner, but Atubolu stretches to make a fine - and significant - one-handed save.

Frustration for Gregoritsch - and Streich!

Another huge chance for Gregoritsch, whose glancing header from just six yards out grazes the outside of the post. Both he and his coach Streich vent their frustration after that latest miss, and his Bundesliga goalscoring curse continues.
41'

Levelled off

Mainz were quick out of the blocks, generating an xG of 0.92 in less than half an hour, but since Gregoritsch hit the post, Freiburg have looked far more confident and the game is now quite even heading into the final five minutes of this first half.
camera-photo

Closest so far

Gregoritsch, pictured on the ball here for Freiburg, has come the closest to breaking the deadlock, though Mainz have still had more opportunities. The Austrian has had 25 shots in the Bundesliga so far this season, and has yet to score - that is the worst goalscoring ratio per shot on goal of any player in the league, yet he did score a hat-trick in Europe on Thursday.

Off the post!

The best chance of the game so far with Gregoritsch's shot hitting the post and coming back off Batz's back, before being turned away for a corner.
24'

Enforced change

Freiburg have to make a change with Ginter forced out due to injury. Ginter missed just one game all of last season, so when he limps off, it must be serious. Gulde is on in his stead.
24'

First shot, almost first goal

More than halfway through the first half and Doan delivers Freiburg's first effort on goal, and it takes a full-stretch save from Batz to turn it behind.
18'

Next up: Barreiro

Another big chance for Mainz and it's Barreiro for the third time, though his shot is pushed behind by Atubolu.
17'

Ajorque scoops over

Huge chance for Mainz to take the lead with Ajorque put through on goal, but he leans back and scoops the ball over from around 10 yards out. That's the finish of a player who only has one all season and really could do with a confidence-boosting goal.
12'

Richter volleys wide

Barreiro sees his second shot of the game blocked before Richter volleys wide. Mainz have already asked plenty of questions in this opening ten minutes.

Youthful Freiburg

Makengo is part of the youngest Freiburg starting XI in over two years, with an average age of 25.6 years. Their only player over 30 is Nicolas Höfler.

Makengo debut

Jordy Makengo makes his first Bundesliga start today after two previous substitute appearances. The 22-year-old started a senior game for the first time in the Europa League on Thursday.

Three changes for Siewert

With Zentner injured, Siewert had to make one enforced change and it is Batz who replace him. However, two further changes have been made with Sepp van den Berg back from suspension and Brajan Gruda also start, with Fernandes and Barkok dropping to the bench.

Streich rotates

Streich has made two changes from the side which started the 5-0 win over Olympiacos, with Grifo and Höler both given a rest. Weißhaupt and Röhl come in for the experienced campaigners, who start on the bench.

Siewert on Burkardt's return

Jonathan Burkardt came off the bench last weekend to mark his return after an agonisingly long injury absence, but he is only on the bench again today, with the Mainz coach Jan Siewert reluctant to rush him back. "He's an important option for us to have on the bench, and certainly he will get back into the starting XI eventually," he said.

Mainz starting XI:

Batz - Widmer (c), Van den Berg, Mwene - Barreiro, Krauß - Gruda, Lee, Richter - Ajorque

Mainz subs:

Rieß, Bell, da Costa, Barkok, Papela, Kohr, Onisiwo, Burkardt, Mamutovic

Freiburg starting XI:

Atubolu - Ginter, Lienhart, Makengo - Sildillia, Eggestein (c), Höfler, Weißhaupt - Dōan, Röhl - Gregoritsch

Freiburg subs:

Müller, Gulde, Sallai, Grifo, Rüdlin, Höler, Adamu

Streich on his side's sparkling European form

Freiburg set up a date with West Ham United to determine who wins their Europa League group – with both already through – with a stylish 5-0 win over Olympiacos on Thursday, but Christian Streich insisted his priorities lie in the league. "Europe's good for the spirit – it's a wonderful bonus – and the Bundesliga means everything to us," he said. "It's a pity we can't carry one or two of these goals over into the Bundesliga." Indeed, Freiburg start from scratch again at 3:30pm.
