Full-time! Dortmund 1-1 Mainz

Dortmund go into the winter break in fifth place, after dropping points for the ninth time this season. They battered Mainz in the first half and took a deserved lead, only to be pegged back against the run of play. The 05ers were much improved after the restart, though, and fully merit the point that takes them out of the bottom three, overnight at least.

Tame!

Big chance for Mainz as they break with Papela. It's three-on-two, but Burkardt doesn't catch his shot right and it's a routine save for Kobel.
86'

Late challenge

Burkardt goes into the book after catching Haller's left ankle from behind. The Dortmund sub is struggling, and needs further assessment. BVB temporarily down to 10 men...

Chance!

Brandt plays a loose pass straight to Papela, who curls over from 20 yards. Kobel had it covered, mind.

Brandt sends in a corner, but it's easily headed clear by Bell. It's just not happened for BVB in an attacking sense since the restart.

Mainz changes

That's Richter's last involvement. He's replaced by the fit-again Jonathan Burkardt, who has two goals and two assists in four previous meetings with BVB. Young Gruda also gets the hook, with Merveille Papela - more of a holding midfielder - his replacement.
67'

Worth a crack!

Gruda works some magic to win a free-kick on the edge of the Dortmund area, left of centre. Richter steps over it, forcing Kobel to beat clear.

Double change

Bynoe-Gittens creates an opening for Brandt, but the BVB goalscorer overcooks his cross, with Füllkrug unmarked in the penalty box. That's it for two of the three players involved in that attack. Sébastien Haller and 19-year-old Samuel Bamba are sent on.

Half-time: Dortmund 1-1 Mainz

Somehow Dortmund are not two or three goals in front at the break. They've had a catalogue of chances, but only have a Brandt free-kick to show for their efforts and have been punished by van den Bergh's late leveller.

Mainz are level!

Oh, dear. Dortmund have been pegged back, massively against the run of play. Richter asks the question with a 20-yard hit that Kobel brilliantly tips round his left-hand post. Richter's initial delivery travels across the box to Mwene, who returns the ball with interest for van den Bergh to head past Kobel from close range.

There's just no let-up for Mainz. Dortmund break with Malen, who goes into the area and draws another strong save from Batz with a fierce low shot across goal.

Top-four equation

Third-placed Leipzig are being held by Bremen, which is good news for Dortmund. They can climb back to within two points of the top four with a win. Stuttgart, who are directly above them, host Augsburg on Wednesday.

Hope for Dortmund

BVB are 13 points behind leaders Leverkusen prior to kick-off, but all is not lost. They were nine points off the pace after 15 matches last season, before a superb run of form in the new year propelled them firmly back into contention. Only dropped points at home to Mainz on the final day denied them a first title since 2011/12.

Mainz improving

The 05ers have collected six points from as many games with Siewert in interim charge, compared to three in nine prior under Bo Svensson. Their only win of the campaign - 2-0 vs. Leipzig - fell on their caretaker coach's watch.

Goals or not?

Some 15 goals have been scored in the past three Bundesliga games in Dortmund. However, Mainz have conceded just one goal in their past three away matches.

Expect goals

Whenever Dortmund play on home soil in the Bundesliga recently, goals are almost a guarantee. Spectators have seen 15 goals across the last three games at Signal Iduna Park - Leipzig won 3-2 last time out, after Dortmund followed up a 4-0 home defeat versus Bayern with a 4-2 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Head-to-head

Dortmund are unbeaten in their previous six games against Mainz, winning four. However, the 2-2 draw on the final day of last season, which ultimately cost them the title, felt like a defeat. Die Nullfünfer last picked up all three points in June 2020, winning 2-0 at Signal Iduna Park.

Terzić's view on Mainz

"The way last season ended against Mainz hasn't been a factor in our preparations for this game. As a general rule, Mainz play with great intensity and are very flexible in terms of tactics. We know they can play better than their current league position indicates - but so can we."
camera-photo

Siewert's view on Dortmund

"They like to attack, they've got a lot of players with pace who can get behind your defence. When they have the ball they try to get their opponents where they want them in order to create scoring chances."
