Full-time: Darmstadt 0-3 Dortmund

Jadon Sancho is triumphant on his Borussia Dortmund return! The Englishman started on the bench but, after Julian Brandt had given them the lead in the first-half, the winger came on after the break and proved decisive, providing an assist for fellow substitute Marco Reus. As the game approached its climax, Youssoufa Moukoko completed the scoring to secure the three points.

Half-time: Darmstadt 0-1 Dortmund

Dortmund are in front in their opening game of 2024! Julian Brandt was the goalscorer, finishing off some lovely work from Jamie Bynoe-Gittens to bury into the corner. BVB still have Jadon Sancho to introduce from the bench, too, so they will be looking to put the game to bed after the break.

Darmstadt - the season so far

Darmstadt appear to have a real fight on their hands to avoid an immediate return to Germany's second tier. The Lilies are propping up the rest of the table on goal difference heading into Matchday 17, after winning just twice since their promotion as Bundesliga 2 runners-up. Tim Skarke's scored a team-leading six goals, but Torsten Lieberknecht's side have a long way to go to redress their division-high 41 goals against. Given their goal difference of -21, the gap to the safe house is effectively four points.
camera-photo

Dortmund - the season so far

Runners-up last season, Dortmund went unbeaten through their first nine fixtures, before losing back-to-back games to Bayern and Stuttgart. They ended the year with successive draws against Augsburg and Mainz, and with one league win to show for their last eight fixtures. Like Bayern and Leipzig, they've also been knocked out of the cup, but did win a UEFA Champions League group containing PSG, AC Milan and Newcastle United. The club hierarchy have reacted by bringing in former players Nuri Şahin and Sven Bender to work as assistants to head coach Edin Terzić.
