Werder on the move with Freiburg win

Werder claimed victory over Freiburg, moving into the top-half in the process and reducing the gap to their visitors to five points. Marvin Ducksch gave his team an early lead by converting the first of two first-half penalties. Vincenco Grifo responded in kind inside the half hour mark, cooly converting his own spot-kick to pull Freiburg level. But Werder were back in front when Justin Njinmah fired home from the edge of the box and debutant Julián Malatini made sure of the points in injury-time.

Off the bar!

Second-half sub Bittencourt almost pulled off one of the goals of the season. Spotting Atubolu off his line, the Werder midfielder pings at goal from way out but is denied by the crossbar with the Freiburg 'keeper stranded. That would have been some goal but it remains 2-1 to the hosts.

Werner's view on Freiburg

"The week is short and we're now facing a different game with different issues. It'll be about a different type of physicality. We'll have to defend a lot of long balls and crosses into the box. We have to be 100 percent alert because they have a clear plan in all game situations - that's the most challenging task mentally. We want to go into the game with confidence because we've stabilised and won points against teams from other parts of the table. We want to continue that positive development."

Streich's view on Bremen

"They played a brilliant game [against Bayern], won so many challenges and are in good form. We'll show that to the boys and then look for solutions. They have clear patterns of play because they always play with the same formation. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, they'll be like a mouse on a string."

Happy New Year!

Both teams are unbeaten in 2024, picking up four points each from their two matches.
