Augsburg equal a club record of four straight wins to keep their push for European football alive, and pile the pressure on Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac, whose side have now gone a club record 11 games without a win. The red card was probably the turning point, but a dominant second half from Augsburg is rewarded with the points.

All was going according to plan for Wolfsburg until Wimmer went from hero to villain, fouling Mbabu on the edge of the area. The referee adjudged it to be the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity and Wimmer was sent off, and as he walked down the tunnel fighting back the tears, Maier's free-kick deflected in to bring the guests level. With an extra man, the Bavarians will now fancy their chances of snatching a fourth straight win.

Twenty-five points with a goal difference of -11 marks Wolfsburg's worst ever tally at this stage in a Bundesliga season. Augsburg, meanwhile, can land a fourth consecutive win for only the second time since their top-flight promotion in 2011, having first done so under Markus Weinzierl in 2014.
