Rich scoring form for Hofmann

That is four goals in five Bundesliga matches now for the summer signing from Gladbach.

Open ending

It was a cagey game for such a long time, but Freiburg have nothing to lose now and are committing players forward in search of an equaliser, which is giving Leverkusen's attacking talents the promise of space to exploit.

That could have sealed it! Wirtz hammers an effort from the edge of the box on the break, and Atubolu gets a vital touch to divert it onto the bar and behind for a corner.

Wirtz and Frimpong link up nicely on the left, and the Dutchman turns inside before trying to tuck the ball in at the near post. Atubolu turns it onto the outside of the post and out.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
The scoreline is a near exact match for the run of play, as far as xG is concerned. Will this force Freiburg into more of an attacking approach in the final 25 minutes?

There's the second!

Leverkusen's pressure finally tells. Wirtz has another part to play in it, chasing the ball towards the area expertly from the left before it falls to Hofmann. His drive from the edge of the box hits the post and rebounds into the net off the back of the head of Atubolu in the Freiburg goal.

Frightening Frimpong delivery

The right-back sends a cut-back from the outline that slices through the Freiburg defence, but no team-mate can meet it.

Höler cracks Freiburg's first shot of the match, which Hrádecký saves. Boniface then has an opening on the edge of the box but Sildillia just manages to get a block to it as he shoots.
25'

Waiting game for Leverkusen

The hosts have seen nearly all of the play, but it naturally hasn't been that easy to create clear openings against such defensive opponents.
19'

Palacios over

The one-way traffic continues. Frimpong chips a cross in from the right that Boniface pulls back to Palacios, who drives over from the edge of the box.
16'

Grimaldo goes down in the box

The Spaniard receives the ball from Wirtz and gets knocked to the ground - but there is no real penalty claim as he was dispossessed fairly.
15'

Grimaldo fires free-kick over

The Leverkusen set-piece specialist steps up after his fellow full-back was fouled, but that wasn't his best effort, as the attempted cross flies behind the goal.

Quick break

Fatigue an issue?

Both teams were in action in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. Alonso has made five changes to his side since then, with Streich bringing in four new players.

New-look midfield for Freiburg

The visitors are dealing with a number of injuries to key players, so head coach Christian Streich's hand has been forced, with Nicolas Höfler, Maximilian Eggestein and Merlin Röhl forming a central midfield trio for the first time ever.

Leverkusen are currently on an eight-game unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga, including four straight wins. Only Bayern Munich (nine) are on a longer unbeaten run, but Leverkusen will be looking to draw level with them by avoiding defeat today.

Injury "catastrophe" for Streich

Maximillian Philipp and Roland Sallai both miss out due to injury, much to the chagrin of head coach Christian Streich. "To lose them both now, with a succession of midweek matches, is a football catastrophe," he said. "The game in Leverkusen's going to be extremely difficult. We're going to have to suffer, suffer, suffer there and we're going to have to have a high tolerance level of frustration because we're not going to see much of the ball."
camera-photo

Grifo and the "team of the moment"

Vincenzo Grifo may be Freiburg's man of the moment, with his hat-trick earning Freiburg a win at FK TSC Bačka Topola in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday - and seeing him named by UEFA as their Player of the Week in that competition - but he say Leverkusen are the "team of the moment" in the Bundesliga, warning of the threat his team face today. "They're incredibly comfortable on the ball and have outstanding quality," he said. "You've just got to take every chance you get against them." The Italian did that last season, scoring a free-kick in the two sides' last meeting.
camera-photo

Alonso's view on Freiburg

"It's great for the league that it's so exciting [at the top]. Freiburg are tough to play against. We [Alonso and Christian Streich] spoke a bit after the game in Freiburg last year. I can always learn things from coaches like him."
