Full-time! Leipzig 1-0 Bochum

Antonio Nusa's debut Bundesliga goal gets 10-man RB Leipzig off to a winning start against Bochum. The teenaged Norwegian settled a competitive contest in the second half, though Leipzig - who had a first-half Benjamin Šeško goal ruled out for offside - were made to sweat after Will Orbán was sent off late on.

Powder-puff hit

Baldé does really well under pressure to tee up a shot for Mašović, who can only pass the ball to Gulácsi from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Hope for Bochum...

... in the form of six minutes of added time. Nervy times for the partisan home crowd...

Bochum pushing

Wittek's resultant free-kick is blocked. It's worked over to Boadu, who sees his low strike cannon behind off Poulsen. The corner comes to nothing.
85'

Orbán sent off!

Well, well. Leipzig are reduced to 10 men as Orbán is shown a straight red card for bringing down Boadu in a denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Will Bochum rue those missed chances from Daschner and Hofmann?

Old guard

Long-serving Leipzig duo Klostermann and Poulsen enter the fray. That should be three at the back for the remainder, with Henrichs and Raum on the flanks. Poulsen will, as ever, make a nuisance of himself in the final third.
72'

Drewes OK

The Bochum No.1 is going to try and shake this one off. Relief for Zeidler, who had just made three of his five allotted changes.
69'

Drewes concernn

The Bochum goalkeeper is in some discomfort - it looks like a groin issue. Former Cologne stopper Timo Horn is being readied for action...
62'

Desperate defending

Leipzig suddenly mean business as Šeško sends in a cross that a combination of Drewes and a defender manage to snuff out.

Debut goal for Nusa!

What an impact! Šeško does really well to force an error from Bero. He cuts in and finds Nusa, who feeds Xavi for a shot that's blocked back out to the Leipzig substitute. The teenager only has one thing on his mind, and spanks the ball through a ruck of bodies, under the dive of Drewes.

Rose's seen enough

Positive changes as new boy Nusa replaces Seiwald for his Bundesliga bow, and Simakan makes way for the more attack-minded Henrichs.
49'

Šešk-no!

The Leipzig striker glances a Raum corner wide of the far post. He didn't quite catch it as he'd have liked.
46'

Tame effort

The ball breaks for Hofmann around 12 yards out, but he snatches at it and can only find the gloves of Gulácsi. Don't think he expected that.

Half-time! Leipzig 0-0 Bochum

Leipzig are being held by a dogged Bochum at the break. They've asked most of the questions - and had a goal ruled out - but Bochum can count themselves unlucky not to have taken the lead following Castello's goal-line clearance to thwart Daschner. Will Rose turn to new signing Antonio Nusa in the second half?

Added time

Bochum survive another couple of corner-kick deliveries, but it's all Leipzig as the clock ticks over into the first of three added minutes.

Half chances

Medić does well to block Haidara's dangerous header back into the Bochum six-yard box following a Raum free-kick. Orbán heads over from the ensuing corner.

Wide!

Openda shows a brilliant first touch to bring Simakan's fierce through-ball under wraps. He takes his shot on early, catching the advancing Drewes by surprise, but drilling narrowly wide of the far post.

Name taken

Xavi's booked for catching Passlack a touch late. He joins Bochum's Bero and Wittek in the book.

Denied!

Leipzig go straight up the other end with Xavi. Haidara tears into the Bochum area to meet the Dutchman's measured pass, but his low drive is blocked.
30'

Off the line!

Big chance for Bochum as Broschinski pounces on Gulácsi's heavy touch in the Leipzig box. His initial effort is blocked, but the loose ball falls kindly for Daschner, whose goal-bound shot is met by a brilliant sliding challenge from Castello.

Drinks break

The players take on some much-needed libation in the baking Leipzig heat. It's scorchio today!

Chance not taken!

Haidara sets Openda on his way with another brilliant pass. The Belgian races into the box and has the chance to shoot, but instead squares to Xavi. His touch is heavy as the ball makes its way to back to Openda, who can only scuff a tame effort at Drewes. Cobwebs on that move, much to the relief of the Bochum defence.

Leipzig are shading it, though Drewes is yet to be tested in the Bochum goal.

Xavi switches the play with a fabulous ball into the feet of Simakan. He crosses for Openda, who heads over under heavy pressure from a couple of Bochum defenders.

More on those teams

There's no debuts as yet for Leipzig, with Castello in for Klostermann the only change from last week's DFB Cup tie in Essen. Rose on Bochum

"We gained some insight with their DFB Cup match, but we don't really know what to expect yet. I know Peter Zeidler from Salzburg. He stands for values such as aggressive pressing and vertical play. We expect a wild game in which we will have little time to refocus and react. There will be a lot of pressing and counter-pressing situations. We will still try to stick to our gameplan."
camera-photo

Zeidler on Leipzig

"It might be a good moment to play Leipzig, as they are right at the start of the season. We are looking forward to playing such a great team at a stadium with a good atmosphere. We want to show our best side. We will be going out for a result, of course."

Friends will be friends

New Bochum boss Peter Zeidler and Leipzig coach Marco Rose were once both part of the same coaching set-up at Red Bull Salzburg. Zeidler said: "He is an exceptional coach and one of the very best in Germany. I look forward to facing Marco."

Watch: Xavi "in the right place to further develop"

The Dutch playmaker spoke to the media after renewing his RB Leipzig loan for the 2024/25 season.

Bochum's business

Bochum have been very busy after last season's play-off, making seven free signings and two loans. Headlining the arrivals is highly rated Dutch international Myron Boadu (pictured) who will be joined up front by former Borussia Dortmund prospect Samuel Bamba.

New faces at Leipzig

Speaking of Nusa, the Norwegian is one of three new arrivals at Leipzig, who have also brought in Assan Ouédraogo from Schalke. Martin Vandevoordt has also arrived from Genk to provide competition in goal, but the big news is the return of Xavi Simons for another year on loan from PSG.

Cup fortunes

Both teams got their competitive seasons underway in the DFB Cup but experienced very different fates. Leipzig survived an early scare against third-tier Essen to win 4-1, with new signing Antonio Nusa on the scoresheet. Conversely, Bochum experienced one of the first round's only cupsets as they lost 1-0 to newly promoted Bundesliga 2 outfit Jahn Regensburg.

Story of pre-season

Leipzig toured the USA and played three matches overall, with a win against Aston Villa, defeat to Wolves, and a draw against PSG. Bochum would start their friendlies with three straight wins against lower league German sides before a draw against Magdeburg, defeat to Spezia and a 6-0 win over Ligue 1 side Le Havre.

Bochum heroics

VfL are here thanks to an astounding relegation play-off win against Fortuna at the end of last season. Trailing 3-0 after the first leg at the Vonovia-Ruhrstadion, Bochum went to Düsseldorf and posted their own 3-0 triumph, before winning the eliminator on penalties!

All about Xavi

Well, almost. But what an incredible buzz there was among Leipzig fans when their Dutch attacking master - who weighed in with 21 goal involvements in the Bundesliga last season - decided to stay on loan for one more campaign in Saxony. "I want to leave my mark here," the Netherlands international said.

Die Roten Bullen have the edge

At least in terms of the teams' previous meetings. Leipzig have lost just once against Bochum in the 11 previous competitive games between the sides, with the visitors' sole triumph in this fixture coming in March 2023.
