With nine days between this game and last week's cup tie in Ulm, Bayern used the gap for one more friendly match on Tuesday to help get minutes under the belts of players who joined pre-season late. Kompany's men were comfortable winners against Grasshoppers of Switzerland with Michael Olise, Harry Kane, Mathys Tel and Thomas Müller on the scoresheet at the club's Campus.

Kompany starts with a win

In the Belgian's first competitive game, an away DFB Cup tie at Bundesliga 2 side Ulm, his troops made things look easy. Thomas Müller scored twice, while last season's top scorer Harry Kane, opened his account at the first opportunity.

Contrasting pre-season fortunes

There was some slight concern at Bayern after they started pre-season with a win and draw against lower league opposition, but they soon twice beat Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur to wipe away those fears and make it four wins and a draw out of five. Wolfsburg only won one out of their five games, but faced solid top-flight opposition in Brentford, Como and Lille.

Sweeping changes at Bayern, stability at Wolfsburg

Bayern's summer started with the appointment of Vincent Kompany, and they've since boosted their squad with Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, João Palhinha from Fulham, and Hiroki Ito from Stuttgart. Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have since left for Manchester United. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, have kept things simple, with their only major signing being new no.1 Kamil Grabara.
