Dortmund's injury struggles
The list of Dortmund players currently on the sidelines is a long one. Karim Adeyemi, Waldemar Anton, Gregor Kobel, Ramy Bensebaini, Julien Duranville, Giovanni Reyna, Niklas Süle and Kjell Wätjen are all unavailable today for a number of reasons, while it remains to be seen whether Yan Couto will be fit to appear.

Tale of the tape
Mainz are currently on their second-longest unbeaten against Dortmund, having avoided defeat in each of their past three meetings. Dortmund's last triumph over the Zerofivers came in January 2023, when they won 2-1. Overall, at least, Dortmund have had the upper hand, winning on 20 occasions to Mainz's six.
Dortmund prevail in Champions League
The Black-Yellows weren't at their irresistible best on Tuesday against Sturm Graz, but Donyell Malen's late strike was enough to secure all three points. As it stands, BVB are in the top eight at the halfway point of the League phase, which would be enough to see them qualify directly for the round of 16 should they stay there.

Eyes on Guirassy
Serhou Guirassy has five goals in as many appearances against Mainz, including a hat-trick at the Mewa Arena last season, albeit all for former club VfB Stuttgart. The BVB No.9 only has a better record in meetings with Wolfsburg (six goals in three appearances).
