Half-time: Mainz 2-1 Dortmund

The hosts are in front at the end of a dramatic first-half. Emre Can's sending off threw everything up into the air after a relatively tight opening, and Jae-sung Lee pounced before conceding a penalty that Guirassy levelled from. Although Dortmund remained a danger with ten men, a sharp attack saw Mainz retake the lead in stoppage time and leave Nuri Şahin's side with an uphill task to reverse their poor away form today.

More on that Mainz team

There is one change for Mainz with Danny da Costa (pictured) in for Maxim Leitsch. Mainz also have serious injury issues with three central defenders currently out (Hanche-Olsen, Jenz and Leitsch). They will field their oldest starting XI under Bo Henriksen today at an average age of 28.5)

More on that Dortmund team

Nuri Şahin makes one change to the side that beat Leipzig last Saturday, with Ramy Bensebaini suspended and the fit again Julian Ryerson (pictured) taking his place. The Dortmund bench is again notable for its inexperience, with Donyell Malen the only seasoned Bundesliga pro on it as a consequence of the club's injury crisis.

Burkardt and Amiri the Mainz dangermen

The home outfit's quest for the win will be led be five-goal Burkardt, and he will be supported by midfielder Amiri, who has two goals and two assists to his name in the Bundesliga this season.

Dortmund's injury struggles

The list of Dortmund players currently on the sidelines is a long one. Karim Adeyemi, Waldemar Anton, Gregor Kobel, Ramy Bensebaini, Julien Duranville, Giovanni Reyna, Niklas Süle and Kjell Wätjen are all unavailable today for a number of reasons, while it remains to be seen whether Yan Couto will be fit to appear.
camera-photo

A trend to be broken?

Picking a winner here is difficult considering the two teams' respective form. On the one hand, Mainz have not won any of their five Bundesliga home games this season, with only 18th-placed Bochum (one) picking up fewer points at their own ground than Mainz's two. Meanwhile, Dortmund have lost each of their previous five away matches in all competitions, their worst run in 18 years.

Tale of the tape

Mainz are currently on their second-longest unbeaten against Dortmund, having avoided defeat in each of their past three meetings. Dortmund's last triumph over the Zerofivers came in January 2023, when they won 2-1. Overall, at least, Dortmund have had the upper hand, winning on 20 occasions to Mainz's six.

Dortmund prevail in Champions League

The Black-Yellows weren't at their irresistible best on Tuesday against Sturm Graz, but Donyell Malen's late strike was enough to secure all three points. As it stands, BVB are in the top eight at the halfway point of the League phase, which would be enough to see them qualify directly for the round of 16 should they stay there.
camera-photo

Henriksen on Dortmund

"It will be important for us not to give too much away at the back. Also, if we're a bit smarter in attack and we make the most of our opportunities, we have a good chance [of winning]."
camera-photo

Şahin on Mainz

"Away from home, the energy has to come from within us. We have to win our games away from home, otherwise we won't achieve what we want to. If we pull it off at the weekend, we'll be back in contention. We can catch up at the top again, only if the boys are at their limit."

Eyes on Guirassy

Serhou Guirassy has five goals in as many appearances against Mainz, including a hat-trick at the Mewa Arena last season, albeit all for former club VfB Stuttgart. The BVB No.9 only has a better record in meetings with Wolfsburg (six goals in three appearances).
