Full-time: Wolfsburg 1-3 Dortmund

After four games without a win, BVB hold on to secure a victory in their final game of 2024. They had to concentrate on their defensive responsibilities after Vavro got a goal back and Groß was given his marching orders, but they were able to prevent the Wolves from scoring again to seal an important three points.

Schlotterbeck trusts Kobel

The centre-back leaves a cross into the box for his goalkeeper. It looked as though the cross may have been goalbound, but the Switzerland international reacts well to collect the ball.

Further changes

Both teams have made double substitutions for the final minutes. Will they do the business for their teams in what time remains here?
85'

Wolfsburg powerplay

The Wolves look like they fancy their chances here, and are enjoying lots of the possession in the Dortmund half. Will there be some late drama at the Volkswagen Arena?
84'

Swing and a miss

It falls to Amoura following Kobel's punch clear from a corner, but the attacker doesn't get a clean connection on the ball: that was a good opportunity for Amoura to make the last minutes very tense.

Dortmund slightly overperforming

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
Wolfsburg have lived up to their xGoals value, but Dortmund have managed to score three from just 2.35 xG: this efficient behaviour in front of goal and creation of higher-quality chances have greatly contributed to their two-goal cushion.

End-to-end stuff, no chances

First, Guirassy holds it up well to play in Brandt down the right wing, but the Dortmund goalscorer is unable to find anyone with a cross. Wolfsburg break almost immediately down the right themselves, but Anton is perfectly positioned to cut out the Wolves' crosses once again.
75'

A change apiece

Both sides have elected to make changes at this stage, as goalscorer Beier departs for Couto and Dortmund loanee Özcan comes on for Gerhardt.
74'

And again!

With the Dortmund line stepping up and Wolfsburg seeing space in behind, it looked a precarious situation for the visitors. However, Anton's clever positioning meant he was in the right place to cut out the pass and calm things down from a Dortmund defensive perspective.
72'

Anton in the way

The substitute is in the thick of the action as Amoura looks to square it across the box to a teammate after breaking in behind the Dortmund back line. Anton is there not once, but twice as he blocks the attacker's passes and clears.

No takers

Amoura gorgeously brings down a switch on the left flank before sliding it through to Gerhardt, who plays it back across goal from the by-line. Any contact from a Wolfsburg player would make it 3-1, but nobody gets on the end of this decent chance.

54'

Amoura tries his luck

The attacker cuts in from the left on the edge of Dortmund's box and lets fly, but unfortunately for him and the hosts, the effort sails over the bar.

After Dortmund play it out nicely from the back, Groß advances through the Wolfsburg half before passing left to Beier on the edge of the box. He tries to tuck it away at the near post, but his effort goes wide.

Half-time: Wolfsburg 0-3 Dortmund

They say all good things come in threes: this was certainly the case from a Dortmund perspective, who scored thrice in the space of six minutes to build a substantial lead in Wolfsburg. The home side haven't really tested Kobel and have their work cut out for them if they want to take something away from this game.

Malen advances down the right of the penalty area and puts a cross into the box. Beier gets a touch on it before it lands in the path of Brandt, who skies it from eight yards out. That would have been some return for the midfielder!

Wolves dreaming

Should the home side win here, they would overtake BVB and spend Christmas in 7th place in the standings. Conversely, if Dortmund fail to win, they will spend the winter break in their lowest position since 2014/15.

BVB go again

Wolfsburg knocked Dortmund out of the DFB Cup earlier this season with a 1-0 win after extra-time. Despite that setback, Nuri Şahin opts for exactly the same starting line-up as he put out against the Wolves back in October.

More on those teams

Julian Brandt is back in the Borussia Dortmund starting line-up having missedhis side's last three games with muscular problems. Donyell Malen is also in from the get-go for the visitors, meaning Yan Couto and Gio Reyna drop to the bench. The hosts, meanwhile, are showing three changes, with Yannick Gerhardt, Mattias Svanberg and Jonas Wind all starting for the Wolves.

Ralph Hasenhüttl on facing Dortmund

"It's important to show your best side again before the break. We have developed in many respects [since beating Dortmund in the cup], especially concerning our movement patterns. We have managed to improve our defensive play and our solidity in addition to our quality in attack. We have the chance against Dortmund to enjoy another positive result before Christmas. That would significantly improve the quality of our Christmas holidays."

Nuri Şahin on facing Wolfsburg

"They've really steadied things in terms of results since our cup meeting, picked up a lot of points. You know what you're going to get with Ralph Hasenhüttl. The team clearly bears his mark. We've seen this season where we can go, but have also had a lot of setbacks. I'm expecting me and my team to perform in a more stable and constant way."

All they want for Xmas...

Dortmund have not won a competitive game in December for three years, drawing six and losing four, dating back to a 3-0 victory over Greuther Fürth on 15 December 2021.
