Full-time: Heidenheim 2-0 Union Berlin

Frank Schmidt's men get their season back underway in ideal fashion; with a win and debut goal for new signing Krätzig. Despite a promising start to the game from Steffen Baumgart's side, the red card to Rothe in the 37th minute proved their undoing, allowing Heidenheim to dominate the second half. Union were resilient, however, making it difficult for Heidenheim to kill the game, but Beck ultimately sealed the deal when he pounced on a rebound to make it 2-0 to the hosts in the 83rd minute.

Beck seals the deal!

The substitute has surely won it for Heidenheim. Conteh works it to Zivzivadze on the edge of the box, who takes a touch before shooting with his left. Schwolow parries, but only into the path of the on-rushing Beck, who has plenty of time to pick his spot and finish unchallenged.

Half-time: Heidenheim 1-0 Union

The sides go in at the end of the first half with Heidenheim leading. 10-man Union have had their chances, particularly through Jordan and Skov, and they've had more shots and a better xG than the hosts, but Heidenheim have made their chances count. New kid on the block Krätzig scored on his debut, getting on the edge of a Scienza cross to finish coolly. Scienza was replaced inside 30 minutes by Conteh, due to an injury, with the substitute causing havoc on the Union defence, leading to Rothe's sending-off. A big half ahead for Baumgart's men...

Rothe dismissed!

It's gone from bad to worse for Steffen Baumgart's side. An overhit pass back to Rothe falls to Conteh, who's through on goal. Rothe attempts to recover the mistake for his team, but brings down Conteh, receving a red card for the denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity as he was the last man back for Union.
36'

Jeong shoots

Dorsch misplaces a pass in midfield and Jeong pounces on the loose ball, before driving forwards and unleashing a shot. His effort flies well over the bar, however.

Delight for Heidenheim fans

Midfielder Jan Schöppner has signed a contract extension with the club, extending his stay at Heidenheim until 2028. His previous deal expired at the end of this season, so the club hierarchy will be thrilled to have completed yet more shrewd business this January transfer window.

More on those teams

Baumgart’s first starting XI in charge sees four changes made to the Union team that lost 4-1 away at Bremen in their final game before the winter break. Khedira misses out through suspension, whilst Vertessen, Schäfer and Querfeld drop to the bench. In their places come Haberer, Jeong, Jordan and Kemlein as Baumgart seems to make the switch to a back four. For Heidenheim, Schmidt likewise makes changes to his side that lost 2-0 away at Bochum last time out. Siersleben and Keller drop the bench whilst Honsak misses through injury and Pieringer through suspension. Replacing them are Gimber and Scienza, whilst January newcomers Krätzig and Zivzivadze make their full Bundesliga debuts for the club.

Frank Schmidt on facing Union

"They've got a new coach in Steffen Baumgart who won't just keep things as is. He'll have his own ideas and make his message clear with great emotion. They played with a back four [in their friendly] against Kiel and were generally quite attacking. We'll see how Union do things."
camera-photo

Steffen Baumgart on facing Heidenheim

"When you talk about Heidenheim, you see a similar path to what Union has taken, going from the fourth tier to Europe - it's an achievement. It says a lot about them that they've remained true to their basics, running hard, tackling. They also transition and press well, generally have a good plan in possession."

Bochum awarded Union win

On Thursday, the DFB's sports tribunal awarded Bochum a 2-0 win against Union Berlin following the Ruhr club's protest at the result of their Matchday 14 fixture that ended 1-1 following an injury to goalkeeper Patrick Drewes when hit by an object thrown from the crowd. Union have subsequently appealed the ruling, meaning the new result has not been added to the table yet.

Welcome additions

Heidenheim have added young left-back Frans Krätzig, most recently on loan at Stuttgart, and Karlsruhe frontman Budu Zivzivadze to their ranks. Krätzig showed promise with limited game time at Stuttgart, while Zivzivadze leads the Bundesliga 2 scoring charts with 12 goals this season.

New directon

Bo Svensson has been replaced by Steffen Baumgart as head coach, meaning Union will have a new man in charge for the second part of the season. Baumgart was a fan favourite as a player at Union (2002-04), and most recently managed Bundesliga 2 side Hamburg.

Slipping down the table

Union are winless in their last eight, although they have picked up three draws in that time. They sit in 12th at the moment, seven points clear of Heidenheim.

Revival needed

Heidenheim currently sit in 16th, having lost seven consecutive games. Their last point in the league came in October when they drew 0-0 with Hoffenheim.

Third time's a charm?

Union are yet to beat Heidenheim in the Bundesliga. Heidenheim won 1-0 at home last season, while the meeting in Berlin ended 2-2.

Milestone for Heidenheim

Having earned promotion to the top flight for the first time in 2023, this fixture represents Heidenheim's 50th Bundesliga match. It is likewise a landmark occasion for goalkeeper Kevin Müller and defender Patrick Mainka, who have not missed a single game for the club since gaining promotion.
