Plenty from out wide
Mainz's two wing-backs, Caci and Mwene, have both provided four assists this season to lead the club's provision chart.

Zentner holds
A corner for Bochum is met by the head of Medić, but it sails into the hands of Zentner moving to his left.
76'
So close from Mwene!
Slick play down the right ends with Caci whipping in a dangerous cross. Mwene meets it on the run at the far post and is almost wheeling away in celebration, only for the ball to drift agonisingly wide of the far stick.

Braces galore
It's the fourth time this season Burkardt has scored two or more goals in a Bundesliga game. He'd only managed the feat three times in his career prior to August.

Job done for Jonny
The Mainz striker makes way after his two goals for Armindo Sieb. Bochum make a double switch as Mašović finally replaces Ordets, and Boadu is on up front for Broschinski.

Ordets being treated again
It looks like the defender's wound has opened up again and he needs to be sorted out on the touchline. Bochum again a man down for the moment.

Nothing given
Bit of mayhem inside the Bochum box as Lee sees a shot blocked and then Burkardt races to get into the rebound. He tangles with Bero going for the ball and goes down. Brand waves away any shouts and the decision is quickly confirmed by VAR in Cologne.

Brief stoppage
As so often this game, two players go up for a ball and one comes out of it worse off. This time it's Burkardt on the receiving end against Passlack.

Caci!
Very nearly a second for the hosts as a cross from the left goes over Burkardt in the box and comes through to Caci, but the French defender slices his effort wide.

Drop ball
Bochum have a free-kick wide on the left. Bero looks to bend it in, but it actually hits the back of referee Brand's head and goes behind. He restarts play with a drop ball at the sight of the free-kick, which Bero whacks high into the box on the bounce. Mainz keep their cool and come away with it, though.

Front foot
Mainz are on the charge now. Caci twists and turns past Ordets on the right and flashes in a cross, which Passlack does very well to put over his own bar from only a few yards out.

Germany's form striker?
Burkardt has scored in five of his last six Bundesliga games, netting six times in that spell.

Huge chance!
Mainz with a golden opportunity to go ahead as Burkardt pinches the ball off the back line and races through in a three on one. He squares to Lee, who plays it straight back to the Germany striker, but he puts his shot straight at Drewes.
20'
Oermann done
The young defender hasn't quite been able to shake off that knock to the head from Ordets and makes way for Medić, himself recently back from a fractured eye socket.

No danger
Finally some flowing play as Mainz come forward and Nebel looks to ping a ball into the box looking for Burkardt, but it's cut out.

Two defenders off
The Bochum back three is momentarily reduced to one as Oermann has to make his way to the touchline following his treatment and Ordets is told he needs to be patched up further. The former is quickly allowed back on, though.
12'
Back on
Ordets is back on the pitch and straight into the action going up for a high ball, this time catching his own teammate in Tim Oermann.
10'
Down to 10
The visitors a man down for the time being as the medics clear up some blood on Ordets. They deal with the initial corner well enough, though.
8'
Ordets down
The Ukrainian defender has stayed down since challenging Jenz for that bouncing ball and is being patched up in the six-yard box. Erhan Mašović has also been sent to warm up.
7'
Testing
A long throw from Caci bounces in the box and is flicked on by the head of Jenz at the near post. Drewes needs to react quickly to tip it over the bar.

Physical
You always felt this was going to be a slightly rough game. First foul comes after barely two minutes as Sano is penalised as he goes for a header with Bero. Wittek's free-kick into the box is flicked on and grasped by Zentner, though.

More on those teams
Perhaps unsurprisingly, even with a three-week break, Bochum go with the same team that started their 2-0 victory at Heidenheim - their only win of the season - in the last game of 2024. Mainz, meanwhile, make two changes from the team that won 3-1 in Frankfurt in December as Jonathan Burkardt returns for Armindo Sieb and Moritz Jenz comes into the back three, with Dominik Kohr moving forward to replace the suspended Nadiem Amiri.

Bochum awarded Union win
On Thursday, the DFB's sports tribunal awarded Bochum a 2-0 win against Union Berlin following the Ruhr club's protest at the result of their Matchday 14 fixture that ended 1-1 following an injury to goalkeeper Patrick Drewes when hit by an object thrown from the crowd. Union have subsequently appealed the ruling, meaning the new result has not been added to the table yet.

Too little too late?
Bochum have taken four points from the previous six available to them and will want to continue that positive from after the winter break, but it will be difficult to stop a confident Mainz side.
Mainz flying high
Bo Henriksen's men lie in fifth place having won five of their last seven, including a home win against table toppers Bayern Munich. They are just two points off Leipzig in fourth, and will aim to secure their spot in Europe now the winter break is over.
