Full-time: Mainz 2-0 Bochum

A pretty comprehensive victory for Mainz on the day that Jonathan Burkardt became their outright record goalscorer in the Bundesliga thanks to his brace. The three points send the 05ers up to fourth at least overnight, with Leipzig still to play Bremen on Sunday. As for Bochum, they remain rooted to the foot of the table and are now seven points adrift of the play-off spot.

Zentner holds

A corner for Bochum is met by the head of Medić, but it sails into the hands of Zentner moving to his left.

So close from Mwene!

Slick play down the right ends with Caci whipping in a dangerous cross. Mwene meets it on the run at the far post and is almost wheeling away in celebration, only for the ball to drift agonisingly wide of the far stick.

Braces galore

It's the fourth time this season Burkardt has scored two or more goals in a Bundesliga game. He'd only managed the feat three times in his career prior to August.

Job done for Jonny

The Mainz striker makes way after his two goals for Armindo Sieb. Bochum make a double switch as Mašović finally replaces Ordets, and Boadu is on up front for Broschinski.

Burkardt doubles up!

Two for Mainz and two for their record goalscorer, perfectly positioned inside the six-yard box to nip in ahead of Bernardo and turn in Mwene's low cross.

Bit of mayhem inside the Bochum box as Lee sees a shot blocked and then Burkardt races to get into the rebound. He tangles with Bero going for the ball and goes down. Brand waves away any shouts and the decision is quickly confirmed by VAR in Cologne.

Drop ball

Bochum have a free-kick wide on the left. Bero looks to bend it in, but it actually hits the back of referee Brand's head and goes behind. He restarts play with a drop ball at the sight of the free-kick, which Bero whacks high into the box on the bounce. Mainz keep their cool and come away with it, though.

More on those teams

Perhaps unsurprisingly, even with a three-week break, Bochum go with the same team that started their 2-0 victory at Heidenheim - their only win of the season - in the last game of 2024. Mainz, meanwhile, make two changes from the team that won 3-1 in Frankfurt in December as Jonathan Burkardt returns for Armindo Sieb and Moritz Jenz comes into the back three, with Dominik Kohr moving forward to replace the suspended Nadiem Amiri.

Hecking on facing Mainz

Bo Henriksen on facing Bochum

"Bochum are a good team with a good coach. They've been improving tactically with every game. We need to play really well and especially make sure we win the battles for the second ball."

Bochum awarded Union win

On Thursday, the DFB's sports tribunal awarded Bochum a 2-0 win against Union Berlin following the Ruhr club's protest at the result of their Matchday 14 fixture that ended 1-1 following an injury to goalkeeper Patrick Drewes when hit by an object thrown from the crowd. Union have subsequently appealed the ruling, meaning the new result has not been added to the table yet.

Mainz flying high

Bo Henriksen's men lie in fifth place having won five of their last seven, including a home win against table toppers Bayern Munich. They are just two points off Leipzig in fourth, and will aim to secure their spot in Europe now the winter break is over.
