More on those teams

Heidenheim are getting used to playing the rotation game, such is the success of Frank Schmidt's side these days. The hosts are showing seven changes compared to the team that overcame Häcken in the Europa League play-off with Traoré, Gimber, Föhrenbach, Schöppner, Beck, Wanner and Scienza all in from the get-go. Busch, Siersleben, Theuerkauf, Conteh, Kerber, Thomalla and Kaufmann make way. Arne Engels' departure to Celtic means that Augsburg field Fredrik Jensen here.

Heidenheim starting XI

Müller – Traoré, Mainka (c), Gimber, Föhrenbach – Maloney, Wanner, Schöppner – Beck, Pieringer, Scienza

Heidenheim subs

Eicher, Siersleben, Busch, Theuerkauf, Kerber, Honsak, Conteh, Kaufmann, Breunig

Augsburg starting XI

Labrović – Pedersen, Gouweleeuw (c), Schlotterbeck, Giannoulis – Jensen, Breithaupt, Rexhbeçaj – Essende, Maier, Tietz

Augsburg subs

Klein, Bauer, Wolf, Jakić, Kömür, Vargas, Koudossou, Mounié, Kabadayi

Clean slate

The home side lost in both league games to Augsburg last season, including a 2-5 loss at home to their rivals. They'll hope to make sure that doesn't happen again this season, starting with a good result today.

In the market

Augsburg had a busy end to the transfer window, making three late signings. Chrislain Matsima joins from Monaco, Frank Onyeka joins from Brentford and Alexis Claude-Maurice joins from Nice.

Dorsch returns

Niklas Dorsch returns to the Voith Arena, having previously spent two years at Heidenheim between 2018-2020 after joining from Bayern. Dorsch joins from today's opponents Augsburg, where he made 63 Bundesliga appearances over three years.

Derby day

Both sides come into this early season derby having gained something from their opening game. Heidenheim started with a win and a clean sheet against Bundesliga new boys St. Pauli, while Augsburg drew 2-2 at home to Bremen.

Schmidt ahead of facing Augsburg

"[With the accumulation of games], now we have to rotate. In the first few games everyone was rested. Now it's the fifth game in two weeks and we really have to stretch things. In the past, we always looked at these teams that actually only play, that hardly train at all and can't set any major priorities. And that's exactly how it is. It's always about recovery, about the strain on the players who have played less. It's about preparing tactically for the next task."
camera-photo

Thorup ahead of facing Heidenheim

"We're expecting a really tough game (against a side with) technically gifted players. I’ve got a lot of respect for what Heidenheim have achieved. (Last season's 5-2 win for Augsburg at the Voith-Arena - Thorup's debut on the FCA bench) was a good start for me and the team."

European boost

Heidenheim ultimately saw off the challenge of Sweden's Häcken in a play-off over two-legs in their maiden European appearance to reach the promised land of the Europa Conference League. Frank Schmidt's side will face Chelsea (H), Basaksehir (A), Olimpija Ljubljana (H), Hearts (A), St. Gallen (H) and Pafos (A) in the competition's league phase.

Heidenheim's attacking strengths

Heidenheim scored from a corner and on the counter against Pauli. They did so eight and 11 times respectively last season.

Watch: Augsburg 1-0 Heidenheim - previous meeting

The last meeting between these two took place in Augsburg in March of last season, where Jeffrey Gouweleeuw scored the only goal of the game in an Augsburg win.

Europe again?

After last year's heroics, Heidenheim fans may not be expecting their side to do the same again this year, but the players will certainly be hoping to match their previous achievement. The loss of key men Tim Kleindienst and Jan-Niklas Beste may have also worried fans, but loanee Paul Wanner helped to easer those fears with a debut goal to top off a solid performance from the team.

Watch: St. Pauli 0-2 Heidenheim

Last season's surprise package Heidenheim got off to a flying start with a 0-2 win away to new boys St. Pauli. Their fans will now be hoping for a similar result at home to Augsburg in week two.

Home disappointment

Having gone 2-1 up against Bremen in their opening game, Augsburg will be disappointed not to have held onto all three points at home. Jess Thorup's side now head to Heidenheim, who started their season with a win, hoping the get their season up and running.

Augsburg could only take a point from their first game of the season against Bremen and will now go to Heidenheim in search of three points.
