Full-time: Mainz 1-1 Gladbach

Tim Kleindienst secures Gladbach a point, though it would surely have been more but for a brilliant performance in the Mainz goal by Robin Zentner. Both sides stay in mid-table, with just a point between them after eight rounds of fixtures.

Weigl!

His stinging strike is beaten away by Zentner, who can't hide his delight as Itakura puts the rebound wide under pressure from a ruck of red shirts.

Zentner again!

Another full-stretch stop keeps Gladbach at bay, with Kleindienst waiting to pounce on any mistake. He may well have secured the 05ers a share of the spoils in the last few minutes...

Zentner does his job

Mainz's No.1 dives to his right to push Stöger's free-kick behind. Kleindienst meets the Gladbach sub's resultant corner, the Germany international heading against Jenz and forcing a sensational sprawling save from Zentner.

Kleindienst levels!

Mainz's lead doesn't last long. Pléa wins back possession and feeds Honorat. The Frenchman clips a cross into the six-yard box for Kleindienst, who towers above the Mainz centre-backs to head in his sixth Bundesliga goal of the campaign.

Mainz lead!

There it is. Amiri's involved as Nebel finds himself free on the right-hand side of the area. He sends in a cross towards the six-yard box, where Stefan Lainer unwittingly turns the ball into his own net. The cross just had too much pace on it.

Bundesliga Matchday 8 gets under way in Mainz...

H2H record

Mainz are unbeaten in their last seven meetings with Gladbach, winning three. The Foals shade the overall head-to-head, though, with 12 wins, nine draws and eight losses.

More on those teams

Mainz pair Da Costa and Sieb make way for Kohr and Nebel. Gladbach are unchanged from their win over Heidenheim, meanwhile, with Kevin Stöger among the subs once more.

Bo Henriksen ahead of Gladbach

"Our aim is to finally get that win at home! We want to be more dangerous from set-pieces so that formed part of our work in training this week."
camera-photo

Gerardo Seoane on facing Mainz

"We're expecting an intense game and for Mainz to maintain a high press. They want to move the ball forward quickly. Our approach will be based on being willing to enter into duels, and to also look to play the ball over their backline."

Intriguing starts

Mainz are yet to win at home this season, Mönchengladbach - who triumphed 3-2 vs Heidenheim last time out - have not won back-to-back games for 2.5 years, yet both have more points than they did at the same stage in 2023/24.

Mwene: There were positives, but we have to do better

Speaking to the club's official site, defender Phillipp Mwene acknowledged the positives from his side's performance against Leipzig, whilst also highlighting where they need to improve: "Today we always got to the penalty area quite well, had more possession than usual and won the challenges, but Leipzig defended so well that we kept lacking depth. It's bitter not to have won at home yet, we can take a few things from today with us, but we definitely have to do better."
camera-photo

Seoane: We did well despite changes

Speaking after his side's win against Heidenheim, the Gladbach boss spoke of his pleasure with their performance despite defensive changes, telling the club's official website: "We knew that we had to show robustness and were physically on par with one of the most intense teams in the Bundesliga - and that despite the many personnel changes in our defense".

Identical form

In their last four games both sides have won two and lost two, highlighting a need for consistency in both camps. Both have shown they're capable of causing sides problems but have sometimes lacked cutting edge going forward and been prone to defensive mistakes at the other end.

Too close for comfort

The two sides sit just one point apart in the table, with Gladbach sitting in 11th with nine points and Mainz in 12th with eight points. The visitors have won three and lost four this season, while the hosts have won two, drawn two and lost three.
