Hoeneß happy in defeat

"We were once again very close to beating Leverkusen. Unfortunately, we were defeated in the penalty shootout. But that doesn't change the fact that I'm very satisfied for the most part. We didn't put up the performances we wanted during pre-season, we didn't know where we stood. But today we proved what we can do."

Alonso reveals late masterplan

"After the red card, the game was different. Even though we went 2-1 down in the second half, we were patient and planned to only go full throttle and press for the last 15 minutes. We did that brilliantly, the team was great."
camera-photo

Lukáš Hrádecký praises both teams

"Both teams wanted to win, Stuttgart played an outstanding game. Football is fun again! We won it to continue where we left off. It's good to see that we can come back just like we did last season."

Player of the Match Denis Undav frustrated

"I'm very frustrated. First of all, thanks to the fans who voted for me as Player of the Match, but I'm very frustrated. We had the chance to win the game, but out of nowhere we make small mistakes against Leverkusen and they score. When you're 2-1 up and you're one man up, you have to win. I don't know why we stopped playing football. Eleven against eleven we played good football - but we stopped that. That's not really our style."

Full-time: Leverkusen 2-2 (4-3 on pens) Stuttgart

Krätzig and Silas miss from the spot while Leverksen are perfect! It's yet another trophy for Xabi Alonso's men who played for 53 minutes with 10 men. You'll rarely see a higher quality and more entertaining curtain-raiser than that, and we already can't wait for the start of the Bundesliga!

"It's not a friendly, it's an official competitive match. And what's more, a trophy will be won there, an official title. That's why we're not treating this like a friendly. We know how to prioritise the situation. But nevertheless, we've now put ourselves in a position to play this game thanks to an exceptional season. We watched the [UEFA] Super Cup with Real Madrid against Atalanta. They were also playing for a trophy. Warning from Hofmann

Leverkusen's Hofmann insists there will be no complacency at his club this season. "You can see it in training," he said. "If you have an eye for it, if you watch individual players, how they implement what the coach wants, how they do their thing in individual situations, then you realise: Nobody here will do even one percent less than last season."

Wirtz wary of Stuttgart

Ahead of the final, Leverkusen's star man Florian Wirtz spoke about the difficulty of the task that his side will face on Saturday, telling bundesliga.com: "We played them three times last season, twice in the Bundesliga and once in the cup. Every time it was a really good football game, quite evenly balanced and it wasn't easy to win.”

Captain Karazor

Midfielder Atakan Karazor has been named as the new club captain, following the departure of Waldemar Anton to Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer. The 27-year-old midfielder has made 141 appearances for the club since joining from Holstein Kiel in 2019, and will now wear the armband in Saturday's final.

Undav returns

Deniz Undav's permanent signing will provide a boost for Stuttgart going into the Supercup final, as the Germany international scored 18 Bundesliga goals for the side last season.
