Patrik Schick keeps Czechia's UEFA Euro 2024 hopes alive in Georgia draw
Patrik Schick scored a second-half equaliser against Georgia to keep Czechia in contention to reach the UEFA Euro 2024 last 16.
Georgia 1-1 Czechia
Goals: 1-0 Mamardashvili (pen. 45'+4), 1-1 Schick 59' (assist: Lingr)
Both sides arrived in Hamburg off the back of Matchday 1 losses, knowing that defeat could bring an end to their tournaments. Czechia made three changes at kick-off, bringing in the Bundesliga trio of Adam Hložek, (Bayer Leverkusen), David Jurásek (Hoffenheim) and Václav Černý (Wolfsburg). With Leverkusen's Schick leading the line, it made for an all-Bundesliga attack, but Georgia hand't read the script. After the VAR ruled out a Hložek goal for handball, Georges Mikautadze scored from the penalty spot to give Willy Sagnol's side the half-time lead. Schick brought a diving save from Giorgi Mamardashvili as Czechia turned the screw, before converting Ondrej Lingr's cross to level, becoming his nation's record six-goal Euros scorer in the process. He was forced off through injury soon after, though, with a dominant Czechia sorely missing his end product in the final stages. They were almost made to pay deep into added time, but Georgia's Saba Lobzhanidze blazed over with only the goalkeeper to beat. Czechia and Georgia face Türkiye and Portugal, respectively, on Wednesday, when only a win will do in the race to reach the round of 16.
