Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp named in Germany's UEFA Nations League squad
Eintracht Frankfurt's UEFA Europa League-winning goalkeeper Kevin Trapp has been named in Hansi Flick's Germany squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures with Italy, England and Hungary.
Flick's announcement comes less than 24 hours after Trapp's heroics in helping Frankfurt beat Glasgow Rangers on penalties in the final of the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League.
The 31-year-old pulled off a stunning point-blank save from Ryan Kent deep into extra time, before keeping out Aaron Ramsey's spot-kick as Eintracht won the shootout 5-4 after the match had finished 1-1 after 120 minutes.
With Manuel Neuer Germany's undisputed No.1 and captain, Trapp was an unused substitute in six of Germany's eight 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He earned his first senior cap in June 2017, and his sixth and most recent in a friendly win over Israel in March 2022.
Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann completes Flick's complement of goalkeepers, while RB Leipzig defender Lukas Klostermann, Borussia Dortmund-bound centre-back Niklas Süle, Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, Borussia Mönchengladbach attacker Jonas Hofmann and Dortmund captain Marco Reus are all recalled after missing the March circuit.
Robin Gosens (Inter Milan), Matthias Ginter (Gladbach), Christian Günter (Freiburg), Robin Koch (Leeds United), Florian Neuhaus (Gladbach), Julian Weigl (Benfica) and Julian Draxler (Paris Saint-Germain) are not included. Bayer Leverkusen teenager Florian Wirtz also misses out as he recovers from a cruciate ligament tear.
Germany - who are unbeaten in nine matches under Flick, winning eight and drawing with the Netherlands last time out - begin their 2022/23 Nations League campaign away to Italy on 4 June. They host England on 7 June, travel to Hungary on 11 June and entertain Italy on 14 June. The four-time world champions wrap up Group A3 in September, with return fixtures against Hungary and England.
