Ridle Baku joins RB Leipzig from Wolfsburg
Ridle Baku has signed for RB Leipzig from Wolfsburg, putting pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at the Red Bull Arena until summer 2027.
The 26-year-old joins Leipzig after a four-and-a-half year stint with Wolfsburg, with whom he made 166 appearances in all competitions after starting out at Mainz, scoring 20 goals.
Baku is also a four-time Germany international, having made his debut against the Czech Republic in 2021, while he was a part of the victorious U21 side that lifted the 2021 European Championship.
"Leipzig is a big club with huge potential and ambitious goals, regularly playing in the Champions League and playing high-tempo football that really suits my style of play and pace," Baku said on penning his two-and-a-half year deal with Die Roten Bullen.
A full-back capable of playing further forward as well, Baku provides cover in wide areas for the injured Benjamin Henrichs and competition for Lutsharel Geertruida for a place in Marco Rose's starting line-up. Leipzig are currently fourth in the Bundesliga table, nine points behind league-leaders Bayern Munich.
"Ridle gives us more options in the future. He's flexible on the right wing, has an attacking drive, can tackle and shoot, and is good on the ball. Ridle also possesses pace and currently tops the Bundesliga for most sprints. That overall package makes him an excellent fit for Leipzig's playing philosophy. Given his experience of almost 200 Bundesliga games, he won't need much time to settle in and can help out immediately," added Leipzig managing director Marcel Schäfer.
Baku could therefore make his debut as early as Sunday against Werder Bremen as Leipzig resume their campaign for 2025.
