Switzerland sight last 16

A win for Switzerland tonight would confirm their spot in the top two of Group A, and therefore a place in the last 16. That would make their clash against Germany on Sunday a battle to be crowned group winners.

Solid Swiss support

Plenty of fans have travelled north of the German-Swiss border to support their side too.

Scottish fans charming Cologne

Just as they did in Munich last Friday, Scotland fans have travelled in huge numbers to support their team tonight - and the weather has been kinder on them today after some torrential rain yesterday.

More on those teams

Scotland make two changes after their 1-5 opening defeat to Germany. Switzerland make one change after their win against Hungary, with Xherdan Shaqiri - once of Bayern Munich - brought into the side. Leverkusen's Granit Xhaka (pictured) captains the Swiss as one of three Bundesliga players in their XI.

Clarke: "Regroup and go again"

Scottish head coach Steve Clarke is looking for a new start against Switzerland. He said in his pre-match press conference, "For us, it is to regroup and go again. It’s that simple. It is about doing better, exactly that. The players want to go back and play better and I think that is pretty standard when you play so poorly and let yourself down. As I said when I spoke to a lot of you on Sunday, it is about doing better, working better into the game."

Yakin: "We need to concentrate and focus"

Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin spoke to the press ahead of his side's second group stage clash. He said, "It’s not just about celebrating football. You have to run and when you play against Scotland you have to know what they’re capable of doing. I’m sure they want to hurt us where they have their strengths. So we need to concentrate and focus. We need to work hard and get into the game. And I don’t think they will make it easy for us.”

One to watch: Granit Xhaka

The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder is the heartbeat of this side. Take a look at his 2023/24 Bundesliga goals to whet your appetite.

Tale of the tape

These two nations first met in 1931 and have played 16 times overall. Scotland have the edge with eight victories to Switzerland's five, but the former have prevailed in just two of the past eight meetings. The previous match-up came in 2006, when the Swiss won 3-1 in a friendly.

Swiss strong in Group A opener

Switzerland, meanwhile, started off with all three points against Hungary. Granit Xhaka was one of three Bundesliga players who took the field, while Kwadwo Duah, Michel Aebischer and Breel Embolo all found the back of the net.

Scotland struggle in opener

The Scots came up against a strong Germany side cheered on by a home crowd and were reduced to 10 men shortly before half-time as they suffered a 5-1 defeat. It was a disappointing evening to say the least, and Steve Clarke's men must bounce back immediately here.
