An emotional Andy Robertson

"It's a tough one. It's devastating. All the lads are absolutely gutted and it's up to us to pick them up. What I will say is thank you to the country because we felt everyone behind us and we're sorry for letting you down."

Full-time: Scotland 0-1 Hungary

Wow. Wow. Wow. Just as it looked like we were heading for a scoreless game Hungary send Scotland out of the Euros. Hungary collect their first points of the tournament and will now be hoping they've done enough to qualify as a third place team. All thoughts turn to Barnabas Varga after his worrying early exit.

Game restarted

The VAR team clear a potential penalty on Varga and the game is restarted with a drop ball.
73'

Thoughts with Varga

The striker is taken off the pitch on a stretcher with medical staff holding up sheets around him. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for him.
68'

Game paused

This doesn't look good. Gunn comes out for a Szoboszlai free kick and Varga is cleaned out. Medical staff come on to help the striker and he looked in a bad state.
65'

Class from Orban

Having beat Adams to a ball forward, Orban then makes easy work of McTominay. The Leipzig defender looks a cut above today.
64'

Nice try

Szoboszlai sends a corner past everyone to Bolla, he blasts it back in and Kerkez's header is just over - great chance.

Half-time: Scotland 0-0 Hungary

An edgy first half comes to a close with the match on a knife-edge. It's clear this one is going to be Szoboszlai vs McGinn and so far they're also level. The match has been reduced to set pieces and long-range efforts, and it could well change in an instant in the second half.

Szoboszlai again!

Botka dispossesses McTominay on the attack and Hungary transition quickly. So quickly in fact that Szoboszlai rushes and shoots with his left. It's over again.
45'

Great chance!

The free kick comes back out to McGinn and McKenna meets his chipped ball. He doesn't get enough on it, had he we may have seen the opener.
44'

A third Hungary yellow

Schafer flies in on Hendry on the halfway line. They both end up on the floor in pain but it's the Hungary man who enters the book.
44'

41'

Should have scored!

Szoboszlai tricks everyone and doesn't shoot, instead he finds Orban all alone at the far post. The Leipzig man heads barely over from point-blank range.
39'

Naughty!

That looked like a very high boot from Adams on Varga, but replays show he didn't even touch him. Hungary will be delighted with another close-ranger free-kick though.
37'

Scotland fighting

Ralston does well to get a ball in the box, it eventually ends up with McTominay but the Manchester United man just can't gather it.
37'

27'

Not good enough again

Billy Gilmour takes his turn from a free kick but it's yet another poor ball into the box which is easily cleared.
26'

22'

Another Scotland free kick

McGinn is causing all sorts of trouble and wins a free kick on the right of Hungary's box. Robertson's dead ball isn't good enough, though.
20'

Scotland's dangermen try to combine

McGinn holds off his man and sends in a dangerous cross but it's too high for McTominay. If those two link up Hungary will be in trouble.
19'

Hungary's plan is clear

Every time Hungary get the ball they try and shift it quickly to the pacey Varga. So far Scotland have just cut out the final ball, but there's an opening there for sure.
18'

Styles goes in on McGinn and receives the game's first yellow card.

McGinn reveals family split

Aston Villa's John McGinn is seen as Scotland's talisman and will have a nation counting on him. But the support doesn't extend to his family. He explained: "My uncle Joe and my little cousins Mark and Tamás live in Hungary. The boys were born in Scotland but they're half Hungarian half Scottish. One of them wants Hungary to win, one of them wants Scotland, so I hope Tamás is sad Monday morning!"

More on those teams

The headline from the team news is that Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai has recovered from an injury scare to lead his side out. There's two changes from the 2-0 defeat to Germany. Watch: The best of Sallai

Trying to get Hungary off the mark tonight will be Roland Sallai. The Freiburg attacker matched his career-best season of eight goals in all competitions in 2023/24, and here's his highlights.

Unwanted record

If Hungary don't collect three points tonight, that will mean they've gone nine-straight European Championships matches without a victory. That will match Russia's all-time record from 1988 to 2004.
camera-photo

Bundesliga interest

Scotland don't have any Bundesliga players in their squad, but Hungary have some very recognisable faces. Those are Roland Sallai and Attila Szalai of Freiburg, Márton Dárdai of Hertha Berlin, Péter Gulácsi and Willi Orbán (pictured) of RB Leipzig and András Schäfer of Union Berlin. There's also captain Dominik Szoboszlai who spent three seasons with Leipzig.

Rossi wants maximum returns

Hungary coach Marco Rossi - who once had a playing stint at Eintracht Frankfurt - has been giving his thoughts on his team's must-win game against Scotland today, the 59-year-old saying in quotes appearing on UEFA's official website, "The match will decide our fate. I'm expecting a really tough game, a really physical encounter. But I'm convinced that we can prepare much better, and for sure, we want the three points."
camera-photo

Scots seek first

Scotland assistant coach John Carver told his side to grasp the opportunity of becoming the first Scottish team to ever qualify for the Euro knockouts. "Let's see how the game develops and plays out but if we do it we will be the first team to do it and people will remember the team to do it for the first time," he explained. "That's what (the players) have to think about in the back of their minds. These guys have got us to this tournament and we deserve to be there."

Watch: VfB Stuttgart stadium experience

It's back to Stuttgart for Hungary, who lost 2-0 to Germany at the MHP Arena on Matchday 2, having been beaten 3-1 by Switzerland in their Euro 2024 opener in Cologne.
camera-photo

Win or bust

After defeats to Switzerland and Germany, Hungary have to win to have any chance of reaching the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams. Scotland begin the final round of group fixtures a point better off in third, but also needing maximum points to keep their Euro 2024 hopes alive. Four points could see them through in third. However, their prospects of jumping to second and advancing automatically aren't great. Even if they win and Switzerland lose to Germany, they'd need to overturn a hugely unfavourable goal difference (-4 to Switzerland's +2).
