A proud captain Xhaka

"When you see how the Germans celebrate after the 1:1, we can only be proud of ourselves. It was a great match from us, we were incredibly strong defensively. We also tried to create something with the ball, which is not easy against teams like that. It hurts because we conceded the 1:1 shortly before the end. We have to be proud of ourselves, of what we achieved. That is more important than the result."
camera-photo

Nagelsmann pleased

"In the end it's a well-deserved point. Of course, on the counter, you take risks and can concede. We did well to come back. We deserved to equalise."
camera-photo

The captain reflects

Today was about somehow holding our own. In terms of play, it wasn't at the level we're known for. We perhaps also hit the ball forward too early without being prepared. Of course we would have liked to have won the game again and worked our magic. But that can build up our strength for the next few weeks. In the end, we won the group. Unfortunately, the result often proves you right in football. It was really good for the spirit."
camera-photo

Fülle's four

With his equalising header today, Niclas Füllkrug is now the record scorer from the bench for Germany. A tally of four and counting thus far.
camera-photo

Kroos praises team mentality

"First of all, we're happy to have made it. We've shown once again that we can deal with going beind and that we believe in ourselves all the way until the end."

Nagelsmann to ignore suspension threat

Germany have four players on yellow cards, just one away from a suspension. Those are Tah, Middlestadt, Andrich and Rudiger. With Germany already qualified for the last 16, Nagelsmann was asked if he may leave the quartet out and replied: "I don't care about the yellow card situation, I trust our squad. If I were to rest Andrich now and replace him with Pascal Groß so that Rob could then play in the round of 16, I would find that disrespectful to Pascal. I trust everyone in the squad and everyone should play as long as the tournament format allows. I am convinced that I can throw anyone in if a suspension is required."
camera-photo

Bundesliga interest

Unsurprisingly, Germany's squad is full of Bundesliga players. Those are: Robert Andrich, Jonathan Tah, Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen), Joshua Kimmich, Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané (Bayern Munich), Emre Can, Niclas Füllkrug, Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund), Oliver Baumann, Maximilian Beier (Hoffenheim), Robin Koch (Eintracht Frankfurt), Benjamin Henrichs, David Raum (RB Leipzig), Waldemar Anton, Chris Führich, Maximilian Mittelstädt, Deniz Undav (VfB Stuttgart). Switzerland, meanwhile, have their fair share of Bundesliga regulars, which are: Rubén Vargas (Augsburg), Granit Xhaka (Bayer Leverkusen, pictured), Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund), Nico Elvedi (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Silvan Widmer (Mainz), Leonidas Stergiou (VfB Stuttgart), Cédric Zesiger (Wolfsburg).
camera-photo

Another Neuer milestone

Back to that man again, who - should he be selected later - will make his 18th appearance at a Euros, which will be a new appearance record for a goalkeeper at the competition. Gianluigi Buffon held the previous finals best with 17.
camera-photo

Super-hands Sommer

Remember when ex-Bundesliga legend Yann Sommer deputised for Manuel Neuer between the Bayern Munich posts? The Swiss custodian played 25 times for the Bavarians in 2023 while Neuer recovered from injury and as he gets set to play for a 92nd time for Switzerland today, the former Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper will be keen to see Germany's current No.1 at the opposite end of the pitch.

Fan-Tah-stic vibes

Germany defender Jonathan Tah has been revelling in the atmosphere generated by Germany's Euro 2024 run to the tournament knockouts. "We can definitely feel the buzz around the Euros," the Bayer Leverkusen man explained. "It pushes us forward as a team. We’ve managed to rekindle everyone’s belief and to do that, it was important for us to believe in ourselves first."

Switzerland not through yet

Granit Xhaka's Switzerland are second in the section, two points behind leaders Germany. They recorded a comfortable 3-1 win against Hungary on Matchday 1, but were held to a 1-1 draw by Scotland last time out. Die Nati will progress as group winners with three points, or as runners-up with a draw. They will also reach the knockouts if they lose and Scotland don't beat Hungary. A defeat to Germany, coupled with a Scotland win, would only be enough for for a top-two finish if they're ahead of the Scots on goal difference. If not, third-place tiebreakers come into play, measured against teams in other groups.
camera-photo

Perfect start!

After thumping Scotland 5-1, Germany ran out 2-0 winners over Hungary to become the first team to reach the last 16 of Euro 2024. They'll advance as Group A winners, as long as they avoid defeat on Matchday 3.
