Gündogan: 'Every game a final'

"From now on, every game is a final," Germany captain İlkay Gündoğan said at his country's customary pre-match press conference. "I'm sure both teams will play like it's a final. It speaks for both teams when [the media] say we're the two best teams. It shows we've done a lot of things right, if not perfectly. There's nothing better for a football fan, or a player, than these kind of games. We deserve to be in the quarter-finals. We have a great group of players and a great coach, as well as great staff behind the scenes. There's a great atmosphere among Germany fans at the moment, and we want to enjoy that as long as we can."

Nagelsmann talks Spain prep

"Our preparations are complete, hopefully," Germany's head coach told media on the eve of Friday's quarter-final with Spain. "We've decided who's starting and who's not starting. We had a lot of individual chats yesterday and watched a lot of videos. We're well prepared and confident we can put in a good performance. It's one of the more important games, without a doubt, but our preparations have been identical [to previous games]. Everything's staying the same. It has nothing to do with superstition."

Head-to-head

The recent record between these two does not make for pleasant reading from a German perspective - they have won just one of their previous eight meetings, a run which includes a 6-0 UEFA Nations League defeat in 2020. However, historically, they have a narrow edge, winning on nine occasions to Spain's eight, while three of the last four match-ups have finished all square. It promises to be an interesting battle.

How they got here: Spain

La Roja, meanwhile, are the only team to win all four of their matches at this summer's tournament. They have also conceded just one strike during that run - which was a Robin Le Normand own goal to boot - with victories against Croatia, Italy, Albania and then Georgia in the round of 16 establishing them as one of the favourites for the crown. Amongst Spain's star performers are young wingers Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, both of whom Germany will need to keep a close eye on.
camera-photo

How they got here: Germany

Julian Nagelsmann's men kicked off the tournament with a 5-1 victory over Scotland and have impressed ever since. They followed that up with a 2-0 victory over Hungary and, although they fell behind against Switzerland, Niclas Füllkrug's late equaliser meant they finished top of the group. In the first knockout round, they defeated Denmark 2-0 as Jamal Musiala got himself on the scoresheet - the Bayern Munich ace is the tournament's joint-top goalscorer with three efforts.
