Full-time: Freiburg 2-0 Union Berlin

All over at Europa-Park Stadion, and Freiburg are the deserved winners. They dominated proceedings in the first half, but were unable to find the goal they craved, in part thanks to Frederik Rønnow's fantastic display. Ultimately, a Rani Khedira own goal was required to break the deadlock, and Yuito Suzuki's delicate finish gave Freiburg breathing space. The margin of victory could have been larger, but Rønnow saved a late Vincenzo Grifo, although it didn't matter in the end.

Again!

Rønnow may be on the losing side, but he may well have been the best player on the pitch, getting down well to push a header to safety.

For the seventh time in the Bundesliga, Rønnow saves a penalty as he pushes Grifo's spot-kick onto the post.

Penalty!

Schäfer slides in to try and win the ball, but takes Gotō out in the process to give Freiburg the chance to seal the win.

More of the ball

Union are at least seeing more possession and territory. They do need to do something with it, though.
73'

No attacking threat

Despite the substitutions, Union are still unable to work Backhaus, who has been a passenger in this game.
67'

Suzuki!

Freiburg are two goals in front, and unless Union completely change their style of play, that might well be that! Scherhant wins the ball back and feeds Suzuki, who lifts over Rønnow.

What can Union produce now? They are still waiting for their first shot, after all.

Freiburg lead!

The home side are in front, and it is deserved. The goal is not the greatest, as Khedira turns Beste's cross into his own net, but Schuster and Co. will not care!

Brilliant play from Suzuki as he drives into the area, but his shot narrowly misses the bottom corner and instead hits the side-netting.

The best chance of the game so far! Suzuki receives the ball in the box, and only a fantastic save from Rønnow prevents it from nestling in the bottom corner.

A comfortable stop for Rønnow from Scherhant's curling free-kick.

Julian Schuster on facing Union

"Union will have hoped for a better start to the season. Games against them are always very physical. We'll have to find a way to hold our own. We're also going to need the support from our fans."

Mauro Lustrinelli on facing Freiburg

"Freiburg put in a very solid performance against Trabzonspor. They defended very well and were highly organised. They have the depth to make changes in several positions while still fielding a strong side. It will be a good challenge for us."

Freiburg win in Trabzon

Lukas Kübler's early goal gave Julian Schuster's side all three points against Mo Salah's Trabzonspor in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night, the perfect response to their 3-0 defeat away in Monaco on 22 October. That 1-0 victory makes it two wins from three in Europe for the Breisgau club, who will look to build on that result by beating a struggling Union side at home.

Freiburg first

Freiburg's 16 points after eight matches is their second-best total at this stage of a season after 17 in 2022/23. Their 18 goals scored, though, is a new club record.

Tight Union

Union have been defending very deep in their four-match unbeaten league run, conceding only twice and scoring just three times at the other end.
