Borussia Dortmund will wear a one-off commemorative jersey in their Matchday 28 fixture at home to VfB Stuttgart to mark 50 years since the opening of their Westfalenstadion home.

Dortmund’s stadium, which is Germany’s biggest with a capacity of 81,365, was opened on 2 April 1974 and this week celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The club have released a special shirt in honour of the kits worn in the very first team photo taken in the Westfalenstadion, now known as the Signal Iduna Park. The black and yellow design features a retro BVB logo and that of manufacturer Puma, as well as the years 1974-2024 on the neck.

“Just concrete and steel, until this place becomes a pulsating soul, where the unforgettable moments on the pitch merge with the personal stories of all of us, creating a unique spirit that makes our stadium a place that is unrivalled anywhere in the world. It is just a place until we make it our home. It is just a piece of fabric until it carries countless memories.” – That is how the club describes its iconic home that has now spawned this special-edition jersey.

Borussia will wear the kit for Saturday’s crucial top-four clash at home to Stuttgart. It will be available to buy from 10am CEST on Friday, 5 April both online and in fan shops for €99.99, packed in a special box.

There is only a limited number available, and Dortmund’s special edition jerseys have in the past sold out in minutes.

One-off kits to mark special or historic events have become a common occurrence in the Bundesliga, with Dortmund producing a number of chic designs.

Last year they released a coal and steel hit that was all black in honour of the city’s role in those two industries.

They had a retro neon kit in 2021 and a 110th anniversary design in 2019 that sold out in only 150 minutes.
