Cologne's carnival atmosphere

Among other things, Cologne is famed for its Carnival and there is a party atmosphere in the city with Spain and Georgia fans living it up ahead of this evening's Round of 16 encounter.

Sagnol on Spain

"Spain are the clearly the best team in the competition till now. It's impossible to get success if you only think about defending. We want to show our opponents and Europe that we aren't only good in defence, and can have the same kind of performance as we showed against Portugal."
camera-photo

De la Fuente on Georgia

"We have massive respect for a rival who have had a brilliant tournament and performed superbly against Portugal. Georgia's performance level keeps going up. We simply have to do what we always try to do – produce the best version of ourselves."
camera-photo

Bundesliga interest

Last time out we saw first Spain starts for Alejandro Grimaldo of Bayer Leverkusen and Dani Olmo of RB Leipzig. Georgia, meanwhile, have Budu Zivzivadze of Karlsruher as their German-based representative.

Injuries and suspensions

One certainty to miss this game is Georgia's Anzor Mekvabishvili who is suspended due to two yellow cards. On the Spain side, Jesus Navas is an injury doubt, but the Sevilla veteran has so far not been a first-choice option.

Tale of the tape

The two teams have met on seven occasions since 2012, with Spain winning six of the matches and Georgia one. Georgia's victory came in a 2016 friendly, with the other six meetings have been in World Cup and European Championships qualifying. The pair were in the same group for Euro 2024 qualifying, and Spain won the first match in Tbilisi 7-1.

How they got here: Spain

Impressively, is the simple answer. They are the only team to have won all three group games in the whole competition and are the early favourites to lift the trophy as a result. Spain are also the sole side yet to concede, with Alejandro Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen) and Dani Olmo (RB Leipzig, pictured, c.) both featuring in that impressive run to the last-16.
camera-photo

How they got here: Georgia

What a time Georgia are having things at their very first European Championship. Former Bayern Munich defender Willy Sagnol (pictured, c.) is the mastermind in the dugout who has led Georgia into the knockouts after finishing second in Group G where they beat the winners, Portugal, 2-0 on the final matchday. Karlsruhe striker Budu Zivzivadze is the sole German-based player in the squad, he's been limited to just five minutes so far.
